Aunque Fodor ha elogiado la Teoría Computacional de la Mente (a la que considera la mejor teoría del conocimiento que tenemos), cree que es sólo una pequeña parte de la verdad. De hecho, sostiene Fodor, los investigadores del conocimiento todavía saben bastante poco sobre la forma en que funciona nuestra mente (el título de este libro se refiere al de la obra de Steve Pinker Cómo funciona la mente). La primera intención de Fodor es explorar las relaciones entre las teorías innatista, computacional y modular de la mente y la psicología evolucionista. Por el camino, nos explica en qué difieren la versión de Chomsky del innatismo y la ampliamente aceptada de la Nueva Síntesis. Concluye que, aunque no tengamos ninguna base para suponer que la mayor parte de la mente sea modular, tampoco tenemos idea de cómo podría . funcionar un conocimiento no modular. Así que, de acuerdo con Fodor, la ciencia del conocimiento tiene un largo camino por recorrer. Jerry Fodor es profesor de filosofía en la Rutgers University.
