Flight, Claude (illustrator). The First UK Printing published by John Lane / The Bodley Head Limited, London in 1927. Large 8vo., beige linen-covered boards lettered and decorated in red to upper cover, and lettered in red to the backstrip; top-stain red remains vibrant ; with frontis and a further nine illustrations in full colour, as well as eighteen in black and white, the latter both full-page and in text; The BOOK a Very Good++ smart example with slight toning and light marking to the boards ; with a little rubbing along the spine folds ; endpapers offset with a near contemporary penned ownership name and date to front paste down; internally very good, lightly toned with occasional spots to the margins due to the quality of the paper stock used. The First UK edition, which includes an original linocut, 'Crossing the Road' by Claude Flight printed from the artist's original lino blocks in red, cobalt blue and black. Flight was educated at the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, which had been founded by the Scottish wood engraver Iain Macnab in 1925. It was there that the art of original linocut was first pioneered in the UK and Flight, surrounded by a team of talented young artists and teachers including Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews, soon began teaching there himself. Known for championing MacNab's principles of rhythms, counter-rhythms, sweeping lines and carefully organised sequences of differing colours, Flight is remembered today for developing the art of lino cutting to its full potential. His students later included the artists Margaret Barnard, Leonard Beaumont, Dorrit Black and Diana Drew. Published relatively early on into his career, the present work includes plates by Diana Drew, who at age just 13 and 15 shows "good direct cutting of well-arranged imaginative design" and "a more mature conception based on visual facts". The in-text illustrations further show various tools needed for lino cutting, including oil stones, gouges, burnishers and rollers. Increasingly scarce as the first issue. Still stable overall, and very good. Flight was essential to the popularisation of the linocut, using the medium as a pleasing vessel for his cubist and abstract ideas. First edition, first printing. Illustrated boards with a tan cloth spine lettered in black. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white by Claude Flight, C. W. Toovey, Stanislaus Brien, Margaret Barnard, and others. A very good copy, the binding square and firm, the spine tips slightly worn, the corners a little rubbed, with a little faint toning and light marks to the boards. The internal front hinge is starting but holding firm. The contents, with a contemporary price label (3/6) to the front pastedown, are otherwise clean and bright throughout and without inscriptions or stamps. An instructional book on linoleum cut printing, a technique which the British artist and printmaker Claude Flight (1881 - 1955) pioneered and popularised. Lino-cuts by children are included alongside the work of professional artists, demonstrating the technique's accessibility and exemplifying Flight's promotion of lino-cut as an affordable and easy method of printmaking which he passionately believed would make art available to a large amount of people, including within education. Tall 8vo., cloth-backed pictorial boards featuring a London street scene; lettered in black along the backstrip; with a frontis illustration by Eileen Mayo, and numerous other black and white and full-colour illustrations throughout on glossy paper; The BOOK a near Fine copy; a couple of faint marks to boards, a little rubbed at edges with the slightest hint of fraying to the spine ends; penned previous owner's name in red to the front free endpaper; a couple of minor marks to the paste-downs and endpapers. The book is protected in a removable Mylar cover. The book is dedicated to the Scottish artist Iain McNab, "whose encouragement of lino-cut colour printing made the first exhibition of work in this medium possible." The Scottish artist Iain Macnab was was the founder and principal of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art, at which the art of original linocut was first pioneered in the UK. Gathering around him a team of talented young artists and teachers, among them Claude Flight, Cyril Power and Sybil Andrews, the school taught according to his principles of rhythms, counter-rhythms, sweeping lines and carefully organised sequences of differing colours. It was Claude Flight that developed the art of lino cutting to its full potential while at the school, and who taught it most predominantly. There, he developed the art form to its full potential, and helped to develop the careers of several artists who were drawn to the the school, including Margaret Barnard, Leonard Beaumont, Dorrit Black and Diana Drew, some of whom are represented in the present title. Chapters are divided into the art, design, cutting, printing, and alterations of linocuts, with a final chapter on the rise and future of it as an art form. The introduction is provided by J. E. Includes a frontis by English artist Claude Flight - a scarce, very early work. Flight pioneered the linocut printing technique. 17.5 cm tall. Small 8vo.

Second edition, first impression, which revises the first of 1927, since, as the author writes in his preface, "the art of lino-cut colour printing has made great strides in this country" in the intervening years. This was to the credit of Flight himself; the exhibition he organised at the Redfern Gallery in London in 1929 was "the first exhibition devoted exclusively to the linocut in Britain; its success at the Redfern Gallery, London, led to a series of eight annual exhibitions which he arranged, initially at the Redfern and then at the Ward Gallery, London, until 1937" (ODNB). As he proudly remarks in the preface, "that over fifteen hundred in this short time, and at a price of one and a half to three guineas each, are now on the walls of British homes, proves that a good deal of interest has been taken in the pictorial side of this craft". Quarto. Colour frontispiece, 10 colour and 6 black and white plates to rear, 2 full-page illustrations and several to text.
