Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'American Problems' is a comprehensive examination of the social, political, and economic challenges facing the United States in the early 20th century. Written by Frances Morehouse and Sybil Fleming Graham, this work serves as a foundational text for understanding the civic and social evolution of the post-World War I era. The authors explore a wide range of issues, including the intricacies of the democratic process, the responsibilities of citizenship, and the pressing industrial and economic shifts of the time.Designed to foster critical thinking and civic engagement, the book delves into topics such as urban development, labor relations, international diplomacy, and the role of government in improving the standard of living for all citizens. It provides a detailed historical snapshot of the American mindset during the 1920s, highlighting the period's optimism for progress alongside a realistic appraisal of the hurdles to national prosperity. This scholarly yet accessible study remains a valuable resource for students of American history, sociology, and political science, offering profound insights into the roots of modern American social policy. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. 1938. First edition. xv, 196pp., a frontispiece, 56 other black and white plates, and an illustrations and 3 figures in the text. John Arnold Fleming (1871-1966) was a Scottish industrial chemist closely associated with the British pottery industry. He was also a noted journalist, author, politician, and philanthropist. In this book, he explores the romance of Scottish glass and its history, throwing light on the domestic life of Scotland as well as the Jacobite period. He gives commentaries on dominant styles and decoration, stained and leaded glass and windows, as well as a walk-through of the various technicalities of manufacture. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a gold illustration of a lion rampant on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling on the boards. There is wear to the cloth on the corner tips and the spine ends are bumped with some damage to the cloth and a little loss at the bottom of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with the following inscription from the author on the front free endpaper: "From the author to my expert illustrator, Arnold Fleming - 1938". The illustrator referred to is Kenneth Leslie Graham (1900-1979). His name in the Preface has been underlined and chapter 5 - What Takes Place in the Glasshouse - has been underlined in the list of contents. A few of the plates showing his illustrations have blue 'tick' marks on the top corner and red lines have been drawn down the fore margin of the pages of chapter 5. The front fixed endpaper has a label from The Royal Society of Arts Library indicating that the book was presented by Mrs. Kenneth Graham, and there is a 'withdrawn' stamp on the label. PLEASE NOTE: This is a heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK. Kenneth Graham, and others (illustrator). Inscribed by Author(s).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The first Optical Society of America (OSA) Topical Meeting on Picosec ond Phenomena, held at Hilton Head, South Carolina, in 1978, brought together in a congenial setting an interdisciplinary group of laser engineers and physicists who were exploring the emerging technologies for generat ing and applying picosecond optical pulses, together with scientists from the fields of chemistry, physics, biology, and electronics who saw in those pulses capabilities for studying atomic and molecular phenomena on time scales previously unrealizable. The technology in this field has since developed even more rapidly and remarkably than foreseen eight years ago, and the applications to science and technology, in physics, chemistry, biology, electronics, and commu nications, have proven to be equally extraordinary. Optical pulses with pulse widths shorter than 10 femtosecond - only a few optical cycles in du ration - along with mono cycle infrared pulses, complex nonlinear optical solitons, electrooptic techniques with subpicosecond time resolutions, and a full toolkit of measurement and detection techniques have now emerged, including new methods for making ultrafast measurements in some cases even without ultrafast optical pulses. These tools are now being widely applied to study the internal motions of complex molecules and atomic lat tices, the relaxation times of superheated electrons in solids, the ultrafast dynamics of chemical reactions, the excited-state lifetimes of photosyn thetic and visual pigments, and the response times of the fastest electronic circuits yet developed.

[Film memorabilia] A deluxe limited edition publication. Two copies. Prefect bound magazine format in publisher's glossy softcovers, lettered to spine. A 120-page book featuring many rare and never-before-seen images from the unique 007 Magazine Archive, coupled with exclusive definitive articles and interviews with many of the important names in the world of James Bond 007. As new. Acquired directly from 007 Magazine and Archive by Jon Gilbert of this firm. A special edition of the 007 magazine, being a definite guide to the weapons used by James Bond in the movies, from Dr. No to SPECTRE. The book was available with two different covers, as offered here: Sean Connery in Goldfinger and Daniel Craig in SPECTRE. A desirable title which was soon fully subscribed, it was then back in print for the 60th anniversary (October 2022) with a new Connery cover; that edition has also since sold out.

dj. First Edition. [Spy Anthology] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (19 x 13cm), pp.[2] 256 [2]. With occasional in-text illustrations. Publisher's blue cloth lettered in silver to spine (at least three colours were used without priority), illustrated dust-wrapper, priced at 15s. Exemplary, as new condition. No inscriptions, contents clean. Jacket has none of the usual fading to the red spine and is simply a bright, fresh example. Not a rare book, but exceptionally scarce in this condition- we have handled dozens of these over the years and all have suffered from sunning to a greater or lesser degree. An intriguing mix of factual and fictional pieces, including contributions from Baden-Powell, Le Queux, T.E. Lawrence, Bruce Lockhart, Ian and Peter Fleming, Kipling, Somerset Maugham, John Buchan, Fenimore Cooper, Dennis Wheatley, Joseph Conrad, Eric Ambler, Thomas Hardy and E. Phillips Oppenheim. Gilbert p.45, 115, 186, 545, 643-4.
