Originally published in 1538, Fitzherbert's foundational manual for local magistrates was a staple of English governance, but Crompton's late-sixteenth-century revisions introduced a significantly more systematic, accessible methodology and inserted a vast amount of updated statutory material. A key distinguishing bibliographical feature unique to this first Crompton edition is the extensive index compiled by William West, which was entirely omitted from subsequent reprintings. Although this text would eventually be overtaken in popularity by William Lambard's Eirenarcha, it remains a critical monument in the development of early modern English justice manuals and administrative local law.
