He began his career as a journalist with Reuters. He then became the naturalist on the staff of The Field magazine, becoming editor from 1938 to1946. He then devoted his time to writing and broadcasting. Apart from wildlife, cats and dogs, he had particular interest in the countryside in general, gypsies, fairgrounds and boxing. He showed sympathy with both poachers and gamekeepers. He was the author of the New Naturalist volume British Game (1946). He wrote a weekly column about cats and dogs in the News of the World. His radio broadcasts about country life included Field Fare (1940-1945) and There and Back (1947-1949). He was an acknowledged authority on gypsies,[3] and was President of the British Fairground Society. He was a member of the National Cat Club and honorary Vice-President of the Siamese Cat Club of South Africa. He was editor of the 60 volume series County Books which were published in the years 1947-53 and of the 31 volume series The Regional Books which were published during the 1950s. ; John Loftus Leigh-Pemberton[1] AFC (1911-1997) was an artist and illustrator from the United Kingdom, best known for his book illustrations. During the Second World War he was a flying instructor for the RAF and was awarded the Air Force Cross in 1945.[4] As well as his book illustrations, Leigh-Pemberton carried out advertising work and decorated a number of ships.[4] He also did work for the Shell Guides series. However perhaps his best-known work was carried out for the Ladybird series of books for children, where he wrote and illustrated many of the series dealing with natural history subjects. ; VG/G. The first edition, first impression of each of these works by B…rian Vesey-Fitzgerald, namely: The Ladybird Book of British Wild Flowers (1957), and, The Ladybird Book of Garden Flowers (1960), and, The Ladybird Book of Trees (1963).Each work has decorative endpapers and is filled with several botanical illustrations, both colour plates and monochrome vignettes. Illustrations by Rowland and Edith Hilder (Wild Flowers), John Leigh-Pemberton (Garden Flowers), andS. R. Badmin (Trees). Rowland Hilder and Badmin were important British artists who also worked for the British government's Ministry of Information around the time of the Second World War.Wild Flowers and Garden Flowers with the original unclipped dust wrapper.Brian Vesey-Fitzgerald was a naturalist and author who specialised in writing books on wildlife, cats, and dogs. This is lovely a trio of illustrated guides to the flora of Britain which offer their reader excellent summaries of the trees, garden flowers, and wild flowers that can be found on the island. All bound in the original publisher's paper wraps and 'Wild Flowers' and 'Garden Flowers' with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, generally attractive with light rubbing and a few marginal handling marks to 'Trees'. Some bumping to the heads and tails of the spines and the extremities. Wrappers are both a trifle toned with a few age spots to the reverse of each, and have minor handling marks and slight edgewear. Internally, firmly bound with generally lovely, bright, clean pages; the odd very light handling mark across the set, and a few small spots to the outer leaves. Very Good Indeed. At the time of the letter Canning was serving in his first governmental appointment, as Under-Secretary to Lord Aberdeen in the Foreign Office, in Peel's administration, while Fitzgerald was President of the Bo…ard of Control. The 'Baron Brunow' referred to in the letter is Russian Ambassador in London, Philipp Graf von Brunnow (1797-1895). 2pp, 12mo. On first leaf of a bifolium. Docketed on second leaf, 'Lord Canning / respecting Baron Brunow Novr 11/41'. In fair condition, lightly aged, with small ink squiggle at top left of first page. Folded twice. Begins: 'Dear Lord Fitzgerald / Lord Aberdeen does not think it at all necessary that you should avoid communication with Brunow. / He (Brunow) has talked of Persia and Affghanistan [sic] to Sir Rt. Peel as well as to Lord A, and has never said a word in wh[ich] they did not entirely agree with him.' Signed 'Canning'.
