Contains [xviii] 382 printed pages of text, fold-out map to the rear. Sun fading to the spine, light foxing to the end leaves and in Very Good tight and sound condition. Smith played first-class cricket for Oxford University and Surrey, was educated, from 1886 to 1892, at Charterhouse School, one of the principal nurseries of the Association Football game, and learned many of the skills that subsequently brought him fame while boarding at the school. Smith captained the England team on at least 13, and possibly as many as 16, occasions (early records are inexact) between 1896 and 1901, winning at least eight games, possibly as many as ten, and drawing two. Smith retired from football shortly after his final international appearance and became joint headmaster at Ludgrove School, a preparatory school in Barnet recognised as one of the principal feeder institutions for Eton College. His fellow headmaster, Arthur Dunn - who had founded Ludgrove in 1892 - was another noted amateur footballer and had also played as centre-forward for England. Dunn died, aged only 41, a few months after Smith joined the school, and thereafter G. O. shared his duties with his fellow Corinthian, England captain, and great friend, William Oakley. He also taught, from 1918 at Sunningdale Preparatory School and died, aged 71, in retirement at his home in Hampshire. Ludgrove Prize Plate inside dated December 18th, 1906, SIGNED 'G. O. Smith.' Apart from the rare G. O. Smith signature, a poignant aside to the book is that the recipient student, Harry Keppel Chester, lost his life in World War 1. He was killed in action in the first GAZA Battle in 1917 and was posthumously promoted from Lieutenant to Captain H. K. Chester. His parish church, St. Mary the Virgin, in Birchanger, Essex has a marble memorial of his with the following inscription 'To the Glory of God and in loving memory of Harry Keppel Chester of this Parish, and of Kings College, Cambridge, Captain, 5th Battalion Essex Regiment, Born 18 July 1894, died 27 March 1917 of wounds received in action the previous day near Gaza, Buried at Khan Yunus, in Palestine. 'Go thy way, thy son liveth'. The Imperial War Museum, Lambeth Street, London has on view in their collection a gathering of his 1914-1917 letters, privately published in book form by his family in 1921. It is titled 'Letters from Harry Keppel Chester 1914-1917'. 218 pages. A poignant tragedy that 12 year old Harry received as his school prize 'A Boy in the Peninsular War', - killed in action - still a boy. Member of the P.B.F.A. SPORT [Football].

Cloth. Zustand: Near fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: near fine. Signed limited edition of the Memoirs of Harry S. Truman, inscribed to the first female Treasurer of the United States, Georgia Neese Clark. Includes a TLS from Truman about her hostage situation in 1956. (illustrator). Deluxe Limited Edition. Thick octavo, [two volumes], xi, [1], 596pp; xi, [3], 594pp. Blue cloth, titles in gilt on spines over black labels. Top edge gilt. Both volumes appear unread. In the publisher's acetate jackets, small closed tear along heel of spine, otherwise fine examples. Gray endpapers. Housed in slipcases made specifically for this limited edition set, light shelf wear to boards, light soiling to labels, solid hinges. The slipcase for "Year of Decisions" is signed on the side panel by Harry Truman. Only Volume I, "Year of Decisions" is inscribed, and reads: "To the Honorable Georgia Neese Clark Gray / with kindest regards and with appreciation of her friendship and her efficient public service! / Harry S. Truman / Independence / Jan. 28, 1956." The associated letter follows a hostage situation in 1956, when Mrs. Clark was held hostage at her bank in Richland, Kansas. Truman adds to the letter: "Saw in the noon paper that a bandit had been shot in your town - hope he's the right one!" Georgia Neese Clark (1898-1995) was the first woman appointed Treasurer of the United States, serving from June 1949 to January 1953 under President Harry S. Truman. A graduate in economics from Washburn College, she worked briefly as an actress in New York before returning to Kansas to manage her family's bank during the Great Depression. A committed Democrat, she became Kansas's Democratic National Committeewoman in 1936 and supported Truman's 1948 presidential campaign. Following his victory, Truman appointed her Treasurer, making her the first woman whose signature appeared on U.S. currency. This set of the Memoirs of Harry S. Truman is limited to 500 unnumbered copies. They were originally meant to be released to the public as a signed limited edition set for $35.00, but President Truman had no desire to profit from his signature. In a letter to Ken McCormick of Doubleday, dated July 1, 1955, Truman comments that "I cannot possibly enter into a program which would look as if I were selling autographs instead of a book. I want the book sold on its merit." Doubleday sent President Truman 500 copies of the deluxe set, which he inscribed to dignitaries over the years. Not all of the 500 were distributed by the president, with a few remaining unsigned copies being sold at the Truman Library.

Includes a laid-in "gift certificate" for the upcoming release of Volume II. (Burns 0016) Housed in custom gray cloth slipcase. Truman inscribed this copy on the dedication leaf, which was defaced above his signature in 2015 by an unknown individual. Attempts were made to remove graffiti, but it was only partially successful. This copy is inscribed by President Harry S. Truman in Volume I to the head of the Motion Picture Association of America, Eric Johnston: "To the Honorable Eric Johnston / with kindest regards and happy memories of our association, from his good friend, Harry Truman / Independence / April 21, 1956." Eric Johnston (18961963) was an American businessman and civic leader who served as president of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) from 1945 until his death. In 1947, he played a central role in issuing the Waldorf Statement, a declaration by major Hollywood studio executives at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel pledging not to employ individuals affiliated with the Communist Party, marking the start of the Hollywood blacklist. In 1951 during the Korean War, President Harry S. Truman appointed Johnston as head of the Economic Stabilization Agency, where he oversaw price and wage controls to fight inflation and maintain economic balance. (Provenance: RR Auctions, 2025).

Octavo, [two volumes], xi, 596pp; xi, 594pp. Black cloth, titles in silver on spines, signature of the author in gilt on front covers. Stated "first edition" in both volumes. Top edge dyed green. Some wear to front hinge of Volume I, sound text block in both volumes. Housed in custom gray cloth slipcase. In the publisher's first state dust jackets, $5.00 on front flap, toning to spine of both, light chipping along top edge, both in exceptional condition considering how jackets from this edition typically age. (Burns 0016) Inscribed by President Harry S. Truman in Year of Decisions: "To my good friend, Hon. Dick Daley, the great Mayor of the Windy City. 10/6/56. Harry Truman." An exceptional association copy. With 1956 being an election year, presidential candidates were vying for high profile endorsements, such as former President Harry Truman. The recipient of this book, Chicago Mayor Richard J. Daley, was the chairman of Adlai Stevenson's Illinois delegation. In August of 1956, Truman had endorsed Averell Harriman for the Democratic ticket. The nomination would eventually go to Stevenson, and Truman enthusiastically endorsed him for the presidency. The dedication in this book, to "the great Mayor of the Windy City," begs the question if there was a double meaning in this inscription between two political allies who found themselves at odds during the fall of 1956. (Provenance: From the private collection of Patrick McClain (1926-2020), aide to Mayor Richard M. Daley.).
