Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Reissue. Minor shelf wear. Else a bright, clean copy. Pindar's Pythian Eleven is a miniature masterpiece: a poem praising a young athlete which presents a vivid and important account of the Agamemnon legend. Yet it contains so many difficulties (of text, metre, dating and interpretation) that even Wilamowitz regarded it as one of Pindar's most obscure poems. This 2007 edition (the first full-scale treatment that the poem had ever received) provides answers to the problems that have prevented proper appreciation of the work. In addition to the full introduction and commentary, the book also has a text based on re-examination of the manuscripts, detailed metrical discussion, and a translation.

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 2018. 1st paperback ed. XII,211p. Paperback. 'The book is structured around three ideas based on ancient claims about Stesichorus: first, that Stesichorus is 'supremely Homeric' (.); second, that there is more to his narrative technique than Quintilian?s remark (Stesichorus) 'is redundant and diffuse' ('redundat atque effunditur', Inst. 10.1.62); finally, that even though a character in a fifth-century comedy declares that 'it is old- fashioned to sing Stesichorus? works' (.), the poet?s influence can be traced throughout centuries, from the mid-sixth century BCE to our days. (.). There is much to be gained from this learned volume, but we are still some distance away from encountering the world of the poet.' (PAULINE LEVEN on the 1st ed. in Bryn Mawr Classical Review, 2016.05.48).

Oxford University Press, Oxford (.), 2007. 406p. Cloth. Wrps gone. Cover a little bit stained. 'Readers of BMCR will need no introduction to M. L. West, whose publications (so says the jacket of the book under review) 'over nearly half a century . have transformed our understanding of Greek poetry.' Here are 24 essays, mostly on Greek poetry, written to celebrate his 70th birthday. The book also reprints 'Forward into the Past', West's Balzan Prize acceptance speech (2000), and includes a complete bibliography of his academic publications - a staggering 497 items so far. Ranging across several of the fields in which West has exercised his enormous influence, the volume makes no attempt at unity of theme or purpose. Its value lies in the high quality of most of the individual contributions.' (JOHN GIBERT in Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2008.06.23). From the library of the late Sir Kenneth James Dover.
