Picinelli believed that the world created by God could be read as a book of symbols. Guided by this belief, he began to collect and describe emblems. This evolved into his famous Book of Emblems, a work of over a thousand pages with encyclopaedic pretensions. It was first published in Milan in 1653 as 'Mondo Simbolico'. But it was the Latin translation by Augustin Erath (Cologne 1681) that made it one of the most popular reference works among the intellectual elite and artists of the Baroque era. ¶.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Beautiful book of emblems by an Augustinian scholar Filippo Picinelli (1604-1679). The Symbolic World was first published in 1653 in Venice. It was a typical emblematic treatise of the Counter-Reformation. The Symbolic World (1653) by the Jesuit [Augustinian] Picinelli is a collection of cases intended for preachers, in which the emblems represent the various vices and the mottos translate the visual messages into the form of an epigram, expressing the educational will of the Counter-Reformation: thus the cat when he is bunting just before scratching, it depicts the lascivious woman, who "when she jokes, mocks" (cum ledit, laedit) (Paolo Rinoldi, L emblematica). The copper plates were carved by a famous Milanese engraver Simone Durello (1641-1719). Text in Italian. In 4to. Complete. 33.6x22.2cm. 16 pages for the introduction + 892 pages for the main text + 114 pages for the index. 54 copperplate illustrations. Vellum binding with four raised bands. Slight wear on the cover, some stains on the first and last pages, otherwise in near fine condition. May require extra shipping due to size and weight.
