First Ed.Pedro Figari Solari (Montevideo, June 29, 1861 - July 24, 1938) was a well-known Uruguayan painter, lawyer and politician. One of the most prominent figures in Latin American painting, described by his own style and his American will. He was born in Montevideo on June 29, 1861. He studied law and excelled in his legal profession. Defender of the Civil and Criminal Poor, he was one of the promoters of the abolition of the death penalty and had a resounding performance in the so-called Almeida case, in which he proved the innocence of an army lieutenant accused of a crime that had not committed. In 1886 he traveled with his young wife through Europe, where he met the main artistic movements. Back in Montevideo, although his work as a lawyer, deputy and journalist occupied most of his time, he always remained close to the visual arts. In 1910 he proposed a reform of the National School of Arts and Crafts with an innovative spirit, seeking to integrate art and crafts, and in 1915 he was appointed director of it. (codz).
