Un total de 85 cartas que resultan una herramienta clave tanto para entender las ideas de sus remitentes como para arrojar algo de luz sobre unos años que dieron lugar al mundo en el que ahora vivimos. A través de estas cartas se pueden trazar las tensiones cambiantes durante los 16 años que van desde 1791 (aparición de la primera Constitución moderna de la historia, promulgada por la Asamblea Nacional Constituyente francesa como consecuencia de la inmediatamente anterior revolución) hasta 1807 (en el corazón de las guerras napoleónicas), uno de los tiempos más convulsos conocidos en los que, como dice el profesor Hugo Renato Ochoa Disselkoen, «hay militares que son políticos, leen a Kant y reflexionan sobre sus escritos políticos; filósofos poetas o poetas filósofos; banqueros literatos, o poetas naturalistas», todos en el esfuerzo común de tratar de apresar desesperadamente el nervio de este tiempo nuevo con un atrevimiento casi inaudito. Tanto la traducción como las introducciones a cada uno de los juegos de cartas y las abundantes notas filológicas y aclaratorias han corrido a cargo de Hugo Renato Ochoa Disselkoen, profesor de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, y Raúl Gutiérrez, profesor de la Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú.
