Robert Hugh Ferrell (May 8, 1921 - August 8, 2018) was an American historian and a prolific author or editor of more than 60 books on a wide range of topics, including the U.S. presidency, World War I, and U.S. foreign policy and diplomacy. One of the country's leading historians, Ferrell was widely considered the preeminent authority on the administration of Harry S. Truman, and also wrote books about half a dozen other 20th-century presidents. He was thought by many in the field to be the "dean of American diplomatic historians," a title he himself eschewed. Ferrell was an intelligence analyst in the U.S. Air Force in Washington, D.C., during the Korean War. This book contains the private papers of Harry S. Truman, in and out of the White House, beginning in 1945 and ending in November 1971, when only a few months of life remained and the retired president's days had become so constricted that he ran out of things to write about. The Truman diary is frank, rambunctious, full of life, but no less full of a sense of duty at least equal to that of HST's nineteenth-century predecessors. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].

Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Rose Walsh (illustrator). Presumed First Edition, First printing. iv, 68, [4] pages. Footnotes. Illustrations. Appendix A, B, and C. Sources Consulted. This is the story of the Ninth Naval Construction Battalion in WWII. It is told in the veterans own words and illustrated with many of their personal photographs. The author adds correspondence, maps, logbooks, and the Battalion's newspaper to create a record of the Ninth's wartime service. The unit, commission in 1942 in Virginia, served in Iceland, Rhode Island, California, Hawaii, Tinian, and Okinawa. With hard work and ingenuity the Battalion built the military infrastructure that stymied Nazi submarines in the North Atlantic and put bombers into the skies over Japan. The men of the Ninth had a substantial impact on brining a swift end to the War. This is their story. After formation at Norfolk on June 6, 1942, the Ninth NCB was divided, with Section One going to Davisville and Section Two to New Orleans. Section One embarked for Iceland Aug. 5, arriving Aug. 18. The First Section returned to Davisville, Sept. 6, 1943. The activities of Section Two were unreported. For its second tour of duty, the Ninth transferred to Hueneme May 9, 1944, and sailed for Pearl Harbor June 25. At Pearl, the Ninth worked at Moanalua Ridge, NASD, Pearl City, Molokai, NASD Personnel Camp and Pearl City Junction. The Battalion moved on to Tinian, arriving Dec. 1. After several months' duty at Tinian, the Ninth was ordered to Okinawa, where it was stationed at the close of the war. The Ninth was made up of approximately 1,100 men organized into five companies. The men hailed from al 48 states and the Canal Zone. Due to the segregation policy, there were no African-Americans in the unit. Most company commanders had college degrees in civil engineering and, like the enlisted members, had years of experience in the engineering and construction trades. Some had served in the First World War.
