Second edition of this decoratively bound description of Burmese life, including chapters on childhood, adolescence, adulthood, trades and professions, politics, cultural festivals, and customs. The first edition appeared the previous year. The majority of the photographs are credited to Max Ferrars, a British colonial official…and the Director of Public Instruction in Burma, as well as a prominent supporter of the Society for the Suppression of the Opium Trade. The rest were taken by his wife Bertha, who died before the work was completed. The Royal Geographical Society has a collection of close to 500 glass negatives by the couple. Of note is the short appendix on Burmese music by P.A. Mariano, which includes five pages of notation and represents one of the first attempts to offer some form of technical analysis. Original reddish-brown cloth, spine with title gilt on black ground, elaborate gilt decoration after Burmese wood carving, similar decorative panels to front cover in gilt, black, and blind, gilt vignette of peacock, the national emblem, top edge gilt, others uncut, glossy red endpapers with figurative designs in black and brown. Gilt bright, spine ends and tips bumped, front free endpaper repaired at hinge: contents fresh a near-fine copy.
