Josef Joesten (1850-1909) studied law and German literature to become a Doctor of Law. After serving at the Municipal Court in Berlin he became a railroad operations director and member of the royal railway directorates in Elberfeld and Cologne. He was, until his death, the State Chairman of the German Writers' Association. Under the pseudonym Miles Ferrarius he composed several writings on the importance of railways in war, among them "Die Eisenbahnen und die Kriegsführung" (Hamburg, 1890); "Die Anforderungen der Strategie und Taktik an die Eisenbahnen" (Berlin, 1894). Under his real name he wrote "Geschichte und System der Eisenbahnbenutzung im Kriege" (Leipzig, 1896, translated into French in 1905). Under another pseudonym, that of Hans von Windeck, he published his dramatic and poetic works, characterized by patriotic spirit and patriotism.
