Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. Ferrari, Giovanni Battista. Flora overo cultura di fiori distinta in quattro libri e trasportata dalla lingua latine nell italiana da Lodovico Aureli Perugino. Rome, Pier Antonio Facciotti, 1638. 4to. Xvi + 520 + [28]p. including last blank leaf. With engraved frontispiece, title, and 45 engraved plates included in the pagination. Contemporary limp vellum. First edition in Italian of the earliest treatise on the contemporary flower garden , a masterpiece of baroque copper engraving sponsored by the Barbarini family. The four books describe innovations in garden techniques, choice of site and preparation, and selected species for planting with latest methods. Ferrari details the use of flowers in arrangement, both in the soil and as artistic devices; knowing their various characteristics and qualities he describes how best to enjoy each kind. The fine plates by Anna Maria Vaiani include 8 of geometic garden designs with intersecting paths (several show individual flowers), and garden tools; particularly interesting is the first known illustration of a specially adapted case for transporting cut flowers (pl. 431). Some celebrated contemporary gardens are named as examples. The 7 splendid allegorical engravings are by J.F.Greutter and Claude Mellon after drawings by Guido Reni, Andrea Sachi, and Pietro da Cortone, including the latter s Triumph of Nature over Art . Apart from a small stain in tailend blank margins of two plates, this is an exceptionally fresh copy with wide margins; this book is usually found in substantially browned condition.
