This book which now reproduces the two Jubilee issues of that Review has been published for a number of reasons. One is the importance of the topics dealt with. The last twenty-five years have seen unprecedented developments in education right across the world, in industrialised countries no less than in those which are still approaching that phase. From time to time it is essential to look back over the past and take stock of how the present situation has come about, to disentangle the trends and sort out from the welter of ideas those which turned out to be non-starters, those which died in their tracks, and those which came to stay. This is only possible after a certain passage of time has set events in proportion and in perspective. The twenty-five years which have elapsed since the IRE was started ten years after the ending of World War II would seem to be just long enough to make this possible, though when the IRE celebrates its fiftieth Jubilee in the year 2004 some of the trends which now seem so definite may themselves have died away to be replaced by others which can now be only dimly conceived. Another reason for this publication is the quality and standing in the world of education and scholarship of the two editors and their contributors.

Dentu, Paris, 1873, 2ff., 374 pp. Marie-Françoise-Théophile-Robertine Fernig (1775-1819) était âgé de 22 ans (et sa soeur Félicité de 17 ans) lorsqu'elles s'engagèrent dans l'armée révolutionnaire, sous des habits d'homme. Très belles, elles s'attachèrent à Dumouriez qui les prit pour aides de camp. Elles combattront à Valmy, Jemmapes, Anderlecht et Neerwinden. Charles Honorine de Villeheurnois (1749-1799) fut l'un des chefs de la conjuration royaliste dite du Camp de Grenelle. Etat très satisfaisant (dos passé, un ressaut de cahier, bon état par ailleurs). Ouvrage peu courant. Théophile de FERNIG (1775-1819) et sa soeur Félicité (1770-1841), filles du capitaine commandant les guides François Louis Joseph de Fernig, s'engagèrent habillées en hommes, combattirent à Valmy et à Jemmapes, et devinrent aides de camp du général Dumouriez. Considérées comme traîtres après la fuite de Dumouriez, elles émigrèrent.

Volume in-12, reliure demi-veau fauve de l'époque, dos à quatre nerfs, titre et fleurons dorés, plats et gardes papier caillouté, 374 p. L'histoire héroïque et romanesque des deux soeurs Fernig, Théophile et Félicité, est connue. Originaires de Mortagne, près de Valenciennes, déguisées en hommes, elles avaient rejoint en 1792, face aux Autrichiens, la garde nationale du lieu. On les retrouve à Valmy aides de camp de Dumouriez. Leurs exploits avaient été exaltés par Lamartine dans les "Girondins". Honoré Bonhomme apporte dans cet ouvrage un éclairage historique et la publication de 33 lettres adressées par Théophile de 1797 à 1803 à son cousin Isidore Audeval, qui était officier au 16ème Régiment de dragons. La deuxième pièce est la publication, précédée d'une introduction historique, du journal inédit de Charles-Henri Berthelot de la Villeheurnois (Toulon, 1750 - Guyane,1799). Chef de la conspiration royaliste qui avait suivi celle du camp de Grenelle et des partisans de Babeuf, Villeheurnois avait été "fructidorisé" après le coup d'Etat (4 septembre 1797) et déporté à Cayenne sans autre forme de procès avec bien d'autres proscrits.
