Se publicó por primera vez en esta impresión póstuma por Andreas Wechel, quien había sido durante años su impresor en Paris, antes de trasladarse a Francfort en 1574. Al texto le precede una carta del médico Jean Lamy, quien se encargó de la edición, a Jean Barjotte, señor de Marcheffrei, nieto y heredero de Fernel, en la que dejó el hermoso dictum de que ?O mi amor propio me engaña, o nadie me ha enseñado jamás ni a admirar las cosas ocultas mediante el entendimiento ni a comprender mediante el asombro.? Que era una buena manera de respaldar la posición científica de Fernel, en la que residía su originalidad, cual era la de mantener una actitud crítica hacia la tradición. Si la teoría heredada estaba en desacuerdo con los hechos, debía encontrarse una nueva basada en la observación sin prejuicios, en vez de acudir a argumentos a priori. Fernel no subvirtió la visión galénica dominante, pero consiguio darle un cuerpo sistemático que hizo que su Medicina sustituyese durante un siglo el Canon heredado a través de Avicena. En este su último texto, tampoco se metió Fernel a debatir sobre la naturaleza de las fiebres(1). No spine, not disbound.De abditis rerum causis libri duo" (translated as "Two Books on the Hidden Causes of Things") is a significant work by Jean Fernel, a renowned 16th-century French physician and scholar. This treatise is one of Fernel's major contributions to the field of medicine and represents a critical examination of the causes of diseases and other natural phenomena that were not well understood at the time, including rabies and elephantias. The book also includes a small treatise on demonology.

Historiated initials. 18th century calf, spine gilt, worn, woodblock red. One of the best editions of Fernel's medical works with additional material. It contains the Pathologia which intorduces the term 'pathology' in its modern sense and which Garrison calls the 'first explicit treatise on special pathology'. It also includes the Physiology libri septem, the first work to deal solely with physiology and the first to call it by name. Gonorrhoea is also described here as an independent infection of the blader apart from the chapter on lues in which the various modes of contact transmission (syphilis insontium) are ennumerated. Fernel (1497-1558), physician to Henri I of France, was one of the teachers of Vesalius. He was the first to describe many diseases such as appendicitisand endocarditis. Very good copy with contemporary ownership signature of 'Annibalis Magnocaballo' in tailend title margin; Hannibale Magnocavallo (1543-96), a physician and writer at Pavia was born a nobleman in Cuccaro, Piedmont and recorded as an academician at Casale Monferrato. Francofurti: Apud Andream Wechelum, 1574. Third Edition. Author was physician to Henry II of France. In his earlier work, "Medicina", Fernel introduced the terms pathology and physiology. He described the diseases of each organ in a systematic method. He also was the first to describe appendicitis and endocarditis. In "Universa Medicina", he introduces the heart's systole and diastole and peristalsis. He also gives one of the earliest descriptions of the spinal canal. Fernel's last work, finished and edited by Guillaume Plancy, his contemporary, biographer and follower. "On his deathbed Fernel was greatly worried that he had not found time to put the finishing touches to his Medicina. It fell upon Plancy to edit the full text of the Universa Medicina (1567), which contained chapters on physiology, pathology, therapeutics, and such." (DSB IV, 586). Le premier avait paru en 1542 (De naturali partie medicinae libri septem); le traducteur dédie son travail à Nicolas Fouquet, puis avait été intégré en tant que partie de la Medicina (1554). Le second texte avait quant à lui été publié posthumément en 1577. Jean Fernel (1497-1558), premier médecin de Henri II, fut le professeur de Vésale. Il fut le premier à employer, dans la littérature médicale, le terme de "physiologie". Il attachait une importance capitale à l'étude de l'anatomie sur les corps et il suggérait, précocement, que les médecins devraient s'y résoudre, plutôt que d'accepter les théories enseignées "ex-cathedra". Il considérait la physiologie comme le fondement et le principe de la connaissance médicale. Ses sept livres constituent le premier ouvrage exclusivement consacré à la physiologie. Fernel y traite essentiellement des fonctions du corps en bonne santé. Il fournit une description précoce du canal central de la moelle épinière. Le reste de l'ouvrage s'organise en fonction des théories humorales dominantes à l'époque; au demeurant, l'auteur reconnaît que le processus physiologique et la théorie des maladies ne sont pas en accord avec les principes galéniques (Heirs of Hippocrates). Quelques annotations au crayon. Une annotation au stylo au revers de la page de titre. Usure sur la page de titre, avec manque de papier touchant légèrement l'adresse.
