Hardcover. Evans, Michael (photographer) (illustrator). Presumed first edition/first printing. 231 p. Illustrations (black and white photographs). Includes a fold out at page 39 with interior portraits of George Bush and Ronald Reagan. Index of Names. Preface by George F. Will. This is primarily a photoessay, but text essays were written by Jane Livingston, Associate Director and Chief Curagor of the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Alan Fern, Director of the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. The publication of this gook coincided with an exhibition of THE PORTRAIT PROJECT at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, January 12-February 24, 1985. Fascinating gathering of black-and-white portraits of Washington powerhouses from all walks of life--not just elected and appointed officials, but influential figures from business, arts, the media, etc. Michael Evans was President Reagan's personal photographer from 1980. He concieved of photographing in a distinctive year univorm portrait style and in 1982, with official sanction, he established The Portrail Project, a nonprofit corporation to support his work and to distribute the portraits to archival institutions. The result is a unique documentation of a time and place, a stunning pictorial survey of the American establishment. Not since Mathew Brady's reknowned portrait studio, during the Civil War years, has a single photographyer so determinedly and so well captured the form and features of an entire cadre of influential and important individuals. This work includes the last portait taken of one of the Lions of the Senate, Henry "Scoop" Jackson, shortly before his death (p. 111). Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ has slight wear and soiling.
