It was the ancestor of most of the important laces that have since been made in Europe, and surviving specimens are the treasured possessions of the great museums of the world.Federico Vinciolo is one of the masters within this art. A leading Venetian designer, he was summoned in France to the court of Henry II, probably by Catherine de Medici, where he had the monopoly on manufacturing lace neck ruffs. In 1587 Vinciolo published a collection of his best patterns and designs, Les singuliers et nouveaux pourtraicts, which went through more than a dozen printings in France and Italy. It remains one of the basic books in the history of lace.For the modern needleworker who wishes to recapture the charm of this antique lace, Vinciolo's book offers 98 plates of fine patterns and designs in various techniques: needlepoint, darned netting, point coupé, counted thread work, and others. Quatrième édition de ce célèbre ouvrage du vénitien Federico de Vinciolo, dessinateur de modèles de broderies venu en France à la suite de Catherine de Médicis. Il est illustré de 112 bois gravés sur bois à pleine page. L'un contient un portrait d'Henri IV. Catherine de Médicis affectionnait la lingerie fine et son siècle a été la grande époque de la broderie. Pour citer Du Haillan à propos des courtisans : "leurs moulins, leurs terres, leurs prés, leurs bois et tous leurs revenus se coulent en broderies, pourfilures, passements, franges, tortis, cannetilles, récameurs, chenettes, piqueurs, arrière points qu'on invente d'un jour à l'autre." (Je n'ai pas tous compris) De nombreux livres de modèles ont été publié au XVIème siècle, mais, livres d'usage, ils sont tous très rares aujourd'hui et sont généralement en piteux état et incomplets. Deux parties en un volume, la page de titre de la deuxième partie porte à la date de 1599. La deuxième page de titre est imprimée en noir et rouge. Elle est restaurée, avec un manque dans l'encadrement du titre. Le cahier M est mal placé. Un seul autre exemplaire est connu : il se trouve à la BNF et provient de la bibliothèque de Théophile Belin. Il est visible sur Gallica et il est en tous points similaire à notre exemplaire. Brunet V, 1260 (cite une autre édition chez Léonard Odet de 1603). Reliure un peu tachée. In-4 de (78) ff., [A2, B4-V4] Vélin ancien. Numerous pattern books were published in the 16th century, but, as books of use, they are all very rare today and are generally in poor condition and incomplete. Two parts in one volume, the title page of the second part bears the date of 1599. The second title page is printed in black and red. It is restored, with a lack in the title frame. Book M is misplaced. The only other known copy is at the BNF. It is on line on Gallica and it is absolutely similar to our copy. Complete copy. Some spotting on the binding. -.…
