Full publisher?s decorative gilt morocco, gilt arabesque title within embossed floral motifs, encased within a finely gilt-tooled border, all within a double blind frame, spine in six compartments of raised gilt bands and gilt-tooled motifs within blind and gilt borders, gilt red morocco label on two, gilt text on six, board edges and inner dentelles gilt, all edges gilt, yellow endpapers. , Adams explains that in 1851, Thomas Holmes decided to publish a work on London in conjunction with London?s Great Exhibition of that year. To do so, he took Fearnside and Harrel?s ?History of London,? published 1837, added more engravings from Trotter?s ?Select Illustrated Topography,? published 1839, and put them ?together with five fresh views intended to give the whole an appearance of contemporaneity.? Our copy seems to be an updated version of the 1851 edition, with a frontispiece view of the Exhibition Palace of 1862, and a brief description of the event on the final text leaf., Size : 8vo., Extra-illustrated with 40 (of 34) steel-engraved plates; however, this copy lacks the frontispiece plate called for in the list of plates., References : Holloway 69 (1851 ed.); Adams 211 (1851 ed.), P. (4), blank, frontis, engr. title, blank, title, blank, 1-78, 89-90, 81-88, 105-106, 91-104, 79-80, 107-219, blank, index, list of plates, (2). Aside from lacking the frontispiece and three misplaced leaves (indicated in the pagination, no loss), this is a fine copy of this work on Victorian London, plates are clean and crisp, bound in decorative gilt full contemporary morocco.
