Ink inscription to fep. 280mm x 220mm (11" x 9"). viii, 216pp + ads. Many b/w illustrations throughout. In 1822 Richard Martin MP sponsored the passage of the Animal Protection Ac…t which outlawed cruelty to cattle, horses and sheep. This was the world's first ever anti-cruelty law. In 1824 the SPCA - Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed. It received the backing of four Members of Parliament, including Richard Martin and William Wilberforce who was well-known for his fight to end slavery in the British colonies. The Society was the first animal welfare organisation in the world. It was also the first law enforcement agency in the UK. It was not until two years later that Britain's first police force was formed. During the first year of its existence, the Society achieved 149 convictions on charges of cruelty to animals. In 1840 Queen Victoria gave the SPCA her permission to be named the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the trend for animal charities soon spread worldwide! Today's RSPCA has 309 inspectors investigating over 100,000 cruelty complaints a year in England and Wales and bringing perpetrators of cruelty to justice. RSPCA inspectors also undertake thousands of animal rescues, collections and establishment visits. Brown illustrated hardback cloth cover.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'A Century of Work for Animals' is a definitive historical account of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (R.S.P.C.A.) during its first hundred years of operation. Spanning the period from 1824 to 1924, this work chronicles the organization's monumental efforts to champion the… cause of sentient beings and institutionalize compassion within British law and society. The narrative explores the society's origins, led by visionary figures such as Richard Martin, William Wilberforce, and Reverend Arthur Broome, who sought to challenge the pervasive indifference toward animal suffering. It details the legislative milestones that transformed the legal status of animals, the creation of an effective inspectorate, and the development of public education initiatives designed to foster kindness and empathy. The text provides a deep dive into the specific challenges of the 19th and early 20th centuries, including the regulation of slaughterhouses, the protection of working horses, and the advocacy for domestic pet welfare. As an essential record of the humane movement, this book offers significant insights into the social and ethical evolution of Great Britain. It stands as a vital resource for historians, animal advocates, and anyone interested in the history of social justice and the long struggle for the ethical treatment of animals. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
