FIRST EDITION, 25 figures to the text, pp. xi, 96, foolscap 8vo, original green cloth, backstrip lettered in gilt, dustjacket with a colour-printed design by Schwabe, some very light dustsoiling and the backstrip panel a shade darkened, near fine. A wartime publication, during which conflict both authors served with the SOE - though this guide offers itself more generally to 'those whose lot it is to use the one-hand gun in the course of duty'. It is a thoroughgoing treatise on the subject, by two men who had served with idistinction in the Shanghai Municipal Police between the wars - Fairbairn specialising in hand-to-hand combat and Sykes in firearms. Together they developed the FairbairnSykes fighting knife, manufactured by Wilkinson Sword for use by Commandos in the Second World War (and still used today). Sykes was born Eric Schwabe to parents of German heritage in Eccles; the illustrator of this work, an official war artist in both wars, was his younger brother, a graduate of the Slade.
