VG, stapled, in orig. white wrapper. 31 p.; 20 cm. `Here, then, we have the Dutch, a burgher nation -- for the nobility never played a conspicuous part -- democratic by nature, of saving habits, but willing to risk money if the risk was at all justified, persistent to the point of stubbornness, and yet curiously enough tolerant and not unwilling to follow the Roman advice, "Audi et alterem partem." We are dealing with a nation which, compared with the southern peoples of Europe, showed on the whole a certain lack of refinement, and a want of what, by any stretch of the imagination, could be called subtle humor, and which on the whole showed little understanding or taste for abstract thought. The Lowlands did not, could not perhaps, produce a Shakespeare, a Goethe, a Hegel, not to mention a Nietzsche. But they did give birth to an Erasmus, a Grotius, and, of course, a Spinoza, whose wisdom, I must admit, sprang from his Jewish blood, although his thought was definitely affected by his Dutch surroundings. Holland might have produced even a Locke and a John Stuart Mill with their sense for the practical, the utilitarian. It has often occurred to me that perhaps they were glad to have their presses print books they themselves could never have produced, for thus vicariously they participated in the thought of others. Thus the Dutch, small in numbers, occupied themselves in vast enterprises.' (p. 12). Binding is Pamphlet.
