Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book provides an introduction to some key subjects in algebra and topology. It consists of comprehensive texts of some hours courses on the preliminaries for several advanced theories in (categorical) algebra and topology. Often, this kind of presentations is not so easy to find in the literature, where one begins articles by assuming a lot of knowledge in the field. This volume can both help young researchers to quickly get into the subject by offering a kind of «roadmap» and also help master students to be aware of the basics of other research directions in these fields before deciding to specialize in one of them. Furthermore, it can be used by established researchers who need a particular result for their own research and do not want to go through several research papers in order to understand a single proof.Although the chapters can be read as «self-contained» chapters, the authors have tried to coordinatethe texts in order to make them complementary. The seven chapters of this volume correspond to the seven courses taught in two Summer Schools that took place in Louvain-la-Neuve in the frame of the project Fonds d'Appui à l'Internationalisation of the Université catholique de Louvain to strengthen the collaborations with the universities of Coimbra, Padova and Poitiers, within the Coimbra Group.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This textbook is designed for a first course in ring theory, module theory and category theory. Written following several decades of teaching experience, it stands out with its clear and engaging style, featuring thorough explanations and attention to detail. Carefully selected exercises encourage active learning and problem-solving.The textbook integrates elementary category theory with basic concepts and examples developed throughout the course. Although the primary focus is on rings and modules, relevant notions for other algebraic structures, such as groups and semigroups, are also discussed. Thus, this book aims at introducing students to noncommutative rings and modules within a broader algebraic context.Aimed at advanced undergraduates or master students in mathematics, this textbook is suitable both for use in the classroom and self-study. Whereas the first part of the book covers a basic course in ring and module theory, the latter part includes optional deepening topics.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - The purpose of this expository monograph is three-fold. First, the solution of a problem posed by Wolfgang Krull in 1932 is presented. He asked whether what is now called the 'Krull-Schmidt Theorem' holds for artinian modules. A negative answer was published only in 1995 by Facchini, Herbera, Levy and Vámos. Second, the answer to a question posed by Warfield in 1975, namely, whether the Krull-Schmidt-Theorem holds for serial modules, is described. Facchini published a negative answer in 1996. The solution to the Warfield problem shows an interesting behavior; in fact, it is a phenomena so rare in the history of Krull-Schmidt type theorems that its presentation to a wider mathematical audience provides the third incentive for this monograph. Briefly, the Krull-Schmidt-Theorem holds for some, not all, classes of modules. When it does hold, any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to one permutation. For serial modules the theorem does not hold, but any two indecomposable decompositions are uniquely determined up to two permutations.Apart from these issues, the book addresses various topics in module theory and ring theory, some now considered classical (such as Goldie dimension, semiperfect rings, Krull dimension, rings of quotients, and their applications) and others more specialized (such as dual Goldie dimension, semilocal endomorphism rings, serial rings and modules, exchange property, (sigma)-pure-injective modules). Open problems conclude the work.--------Besides its research value, this book is a considerable addition to the list of fundamental books in rings and modules. It is written carefully with necessary backgrounds developed in a logical way. There are many fundamental points worked out in the book. All these make the book an excellent contribution to the development of module and ring theory, and a source of reference. Algebraists will certainly enjoy themselves in reading thisbook.(Zentralblatt MATH)This excellent book on module and ring theory (.) contains three kind of topics: classical topics, (.) specialized topics, (.) the solutions to two famous problems, together with the presentation of a rare phenomenon.(Mathematica).

He proved that every nitely p- sented module over a serial ring is a direct sum of uniserial modules, and asked if such a decomposition was unique. In other words, War eld asked whether the ¿Krull-Schmidt Theorem¿ holds for serial modules. The solution to this problem, a negative answer again, appeared in [Facchini 96].
