El fenómeno no se limita a las épocas del Descubrimiento, la Conquista y la Colonización, sino que se extiende hasta el siglo XXI. Una suma enorme de historias, figuras, códigos genéricos y símbolos bíblicos ha sido tratada por los escritores más dispares y sea cual sea su orientación ideológica de modos extremadamente diversos, desde la reescritura seria hasta la inversión paródica y la sátira. Y sin embargo, aunque en parte sea evidente, la presencia de la Biblia en la literatura hispanoamericana también ha sido escamoteada por la crítica. Este tomo, coordinado por Daniel Attala y Geneviève Fabry, está organizado en tres partes: «Del Descubrimiento al siglo XIX: hitos»; «Del Modernismo al siglo XX: grandes tendencias», y «Del siglo XX al siglo XXI: teselas de un mosaico incierto».
