The paintings of Bendt Eyckermans (born 1994, Antwerp) are unsettling due to the visible tension between poetic and pragmatic visual components. For example, romantic skies are combined with shiny car bodies, a carpet is being vacuumed in the middle of the picture plane, a pair of hands floats above a woman?s head and a cameraman kneels to film what is outside the frame. The contradictory combination of expressive plastic forms and the intimate vulnerability that the characters in his work radiate is intriguing. A friendly personage walks down the street with a mysterious object in his hand, disembodied limbs move energetically through the public space and a sculpture has fallen over peacefully. Archaeological survey of the Temple of Beit el-Wali, a rock-cut Ancient Egyptian temple in Nubia which was built by Pharaoh Ramesses II and dedicated to the deities of Amun-Re, Re-Horakhti, Khnum and Anuket. It was the first in a series of temples built by Ramesses II in this region; its name Beit el-Wali means 'House of the Holy Man' and may indicate its previous use as by a Christian hermit at some point in time. A four-year concession was granted, from 1960 to 1964. The initial plans for areas to be surveyed excavated changed a few times (as documented in the preface), and the project eventually recorded materials in several areas from Abu Simbel south into the Sudan." Following a tour of Scandinavia in 1799, Edward Daniel Clarke (1769-1822) travelled through Russia and the Crimea before proceeding to Constantinople, Rhodes, and afterwards Egypt and Palestine. Greece was the country next visited. While touring this country, Clarke, as a mineralogist and antiquary, collected marbles, coins and vases and purchased a large ancient statue at Eleusis. From Athens he proceeded by land to Constantinople, and after a short stay in that city directed his course homewards through Rumelia, Austria, Germany and France. Each of the six volumes is lavishly illustrated throughout with numerous in-text vignettes and woodcuts, as well as full-page copper plates (many folded), depicting views, monuments, natives in traditional costume, ceremonies and processions, antiquities, etc. Includes several folded maps and charts. All the 185 copper plates and 157 vignettes and cuts are accounted for. Plates engraved by Joseph Skelton, R. Pollard, Laetitia and Elizabeth Byrne, F. R. Hay, J. Fittler, and R.
