Illustrated with striking double page lithographs in ten colors by Russian/Ukranian avante-garde artist Alexandra Exter (1882-1949), a constructivist painter, friend of Picasso and Bracque in Paris - and one who worked in many fields from a peasant craft cooperative in Ukraine, to stage designing, costume design, original illuminated manuscripts and more. In her later years she became known for her illustrations for the publisher Flammarion. Large format. unpaginated. Good overall in illustrated boards - some wear to the edges of the boards and to the gray cloth spine, contents near fine, no dustjacket.

A beautifully-produced bilingual (French and English) monograph on Exter, with several hundred color plates. Unfortunately, the scholarship is not on a par with the production values: several dozen fakes are reproduced as authentic works here, and one can only guess at the possible motivations (I suppose it is to "authenticate" the fakes, all of which, interestingly enough, are in a "Collection privee" in Paris). Filatoff, furthermore, seems to know next to nothing about art. Finally, the English text has been prepared by someone with limited abilities as a translator. Still, this is the first major monograph (besides one in Russian) dedicated to one of the most important and intriguing Russian avant-garde painters. Furthermore, there is an extensive section on Exter's role as a book artist, especially her unparalleled illuminated manuscripts. This aspect of her work had been almost entirely ignored by other scholars. Large 4to. Publisher's cloth. FINE AND BRIGHT, in a fine dj. Until some capable scholar comes up with something better, this will be the best introduction to Exter's work.

A presentable copy only of this uncommon item whose covers and top edge of the textblock show some rippling and light brown discoloration due to contact with moisture - but no sticking or tearing. The first twenty-six pages of text on newsprint are affected while the remaining leaves (containing the gravure plates) on heavier paper stock are still bright. It has been priced accordingly. It captured the zeitgeist and combined contemporary art, literature, sport and more. Initially it was published by the Verlag der Galerie Flechtheim and from 1923 by the Querschnitt-Verlag. In 1924 it switched to Propyläen-Verlag. The number of issues varied from year to year. During the first four years a year book was also published in addition. After the April issue 1931, the editor and publisher Hermann von Wedderkop left 'Der Querschnitt'. The issues that followed had no connection whatsoever with Alfred Flechtheim.
