Fine. - The autographs of the neurologist Landon Carter Gray and that of the American author & minister Edward Everett Hale penned on a 2-1/2 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide piece of paper clipped from a daily birthday book calendar with the date "April 3" printed in red along the top. Signed "Landon Carter Gray" and "Edward Everett Hale", who has also penned the year of his birth "1822" next to his signature. Several lines from an inspirational poem are printed in black on the verso. Near fine. Edward Everett Hale [1822-1909] was an American author, historian and Unitarian minister. He was the nephew of orator and statesman Everett Hale and grand-nephew of Nathan Hale, the Revolutionary War hero executed by the British for espionage. He was a child prodigy, graduating from Boston Latin School at age 13 and immediately thereafter enrolling at Harvard University. His best known work was "The Man Without a Country", published in the Atlantic in 1863 and intended to strengthen support for the Union cause during the Civil War. In recognition of his support for the Union he was elected as a Third Class Companion of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States. The American neurologist Dr. Landon Carter Gray (1850-1900) was born on April 3, 1850. He specialized in nervous and mental diseases completed his education at the University of Heidelberg in Germany and his medical degree at Bellevue Hospital Medical School in New York. He was professor of Neurology at the Long Island College Hospital, a visiting neurologist at St. Mary's Hospital and was one of the founders of one of the first American schools for graduate medical instruction, the New York Polyclinic. He served as president of numerous medical societies, including the New York County Medical Society, the American Neurological Association, the New York Neurological Society, and the Society of Medical Jurisprudence.
