Authors take a new approach to primary and secondary lung cancer prevention that is in the early stages of adoption in the United States. The last decade ushered in recognition of screening as an effective intervention, but unfortunately, despite the wide acceptance of the importance of this new screening modality, nationally, not more than 5% of eligible subjects have undergone screening to date in the United States, although in some states uptake has reached as high as 16%. As is common with any new preventive cancer screening, racial and socioeconomic disparities emerge in utilization, stage at diagnosis, and mortality. Over time, these disparities decline, but consequential differences endure. Therefore, it is critical to establish equitable screening practices. The true measure of the effectiveness of any lung cancer screening program needs to be viewed through the lens of its impact on populations, including those most affected by the morbidity and mortality of smoking-related illness and lung cancer. As such, this book emphasizes a number of important public health topics, including community outreach to vulnerable populations, social justice issues, addressing stigma and fatalism in the general community, and the use of geocoding to assess a program's impact at a population level. Collated, complete.A native of Philadelphia and a resident of Haddonfield, New Jersey, Evans was an S.P.G. missionary for Gloucester County and a friend and correspondent of Elizabeth Graeme (later, Ferguson). The DNB credits him with the introduction of lyric poetry to America. Copies of the book often lack the list of subscribers, the ode on Evans' death by Elizabeth Graeme, and the 24-page discourse at the end, all of which are present in this copy.This posthumous collection of Nathaniel Evans' poems was edited, with an affectionate preface, by the young poet's former teacher at the Philadelphia Academy, Provost William Smith. From the library of Samuel W. Pennypacker (1843-1916), an American judge and politician who served as the 23rd governor of Pennsylvania from 1903 to 1907. A judge assigned to Pennsylvania's Court of Common Pleas system prior to his election as governor, he also researched and wrote about Pennsylvania history. Pennypacker was later president of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania and held positions of honor in various German and Netherlandish societies. First and only edition of a collection of poems by the Rev. Nathaniel Evans (1742-1767): he had been missionary for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Gloucester County, but died at the age of only 25. The list of subscribers is intriguing and has perhaps attracted more attention than the text itself. As well as the American subscribers there are several names from Britain, among them the blind poet Thomas Blacklock, of Edinburgh; Richard Huck, of St. Thomas's Hospital, London; William Horn, 'Merchant, Bristol, Old England'; and, oddest of all, 'Oliver Goldsmith, Esq; London'. There is no known connection between Goldsmith and Nathaniel Evans, and the idea that he actually put his name down for a copy seems a bit far-fetched: perhaps one was simply sent to him, gratis, in the hope that he would review it. Among the American subscribers are Mrs Deborah Franklin (Benjamin's wife: he was currently in London); and the future loyalist Thomas Coombe, who returned to Britain in 1779 and left a collection of Bibles to Canterbury Cathedral.
