Buch
Zustand: Gut. Reprint. unpaginiert. Good condition. Preface in Latin. -- Quae hoc volumine continentur fabulae sex, quattuor Tantum codicum testimoniis nituntur; una quidem Troiades V(aticano) et P(alatino), quibus hic illic ad-lendus videtur Harleianus 5743, ceterae L(aurentiano) et P(alatino). Hos quattuor cum notis Prinzianis a Wecklinio editis anno 1903 ineunte denuo contuli; ceteros Florentinos Romanos Neapolitanum inspexi. Fine Binding. Zustand: Very Good. None (illustrator). Three plays by Euripides, translated into English rhyming verse by Professor Gilbert Murray Gilbert Murray's translation of three classical plays by Euripides; Hippolytus, Electra, and Rhesus. With explanatory notes. As one of only three Greek tragedians to have any plays survive in full, the theatrical innovations of Euripides remain highly influential in drama. One example of his lasting impact, is the representation of mythical heroes as ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Whilst the authorship of Rhesus has been debated since antiquity, Hippolytus and Electra are based on popular mythological characters. In Euripides' version of Hippolytus, the eponymous character famously falls at the hands of Aphrodite, whilst Electra presents a story of familial plotting, revenge, and murder. Rhesus takes place during the Trojan War, on the night when Odysseus and Diomedes make their way covertly into the Trojan camp. Prior owner's bookplate to all three volumes. 'Oliver Brett'. Prior owner's ink inscription to recto of front free endpaper in the first two volumes reads 'Antoinette, from Oliver. Xmas 1912'. In half calf binding over green cloth. Externally, generally smart. A little rubbed to the boards and the spine, with some scuffing to the leather at the joints. Cloth to rear board of volume II is a little cockled. The front joint and hinge is starting but firm in volume III, and the rear joint is also starting. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean throughout. Very Good. book.
