The scarce first edition of this memoir of Eugene Corri, a man who spent forty-five years as a boxing referee, and who in 1907 was supposedly the first person to officiate from within the ring.Corri even appeared as himself in Alfred Hitchcock's 1927 silent movie, 'The Ring'.Corri's conversational tone leads the reader through some of the 2,000 fights he refereed, including Mickey Walker against Tommy Milligan in 1927.Illustrated with sixteen photographic plates. Collated, complete. This work belonged to the library of Philip Brocklehurst, bearing his armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, and a dedication to him to the front free endpaper. Brocklehurst is best known for being a member of the Nimrod Expedition in Antarctica of 19071909, led by Ernest Shackleton. A boxer himself, he represented Cambridge University at boxing in 1905, 1906 and 1907 as a lightweight against Oxford University, and obtained a half blue. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail. Contemporary owner's armorial bookplate to front pastedown, and inscription to front free endpaper. Some spots to fore edge of text block. Internally, firmly bound.
