Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. A collection of seven pocket-size volumes (about 3 ½" x 4"), each completely full of pasted in newspaper cuttings, curious and comic illustrations, and hand-colored woodcut embellishments, compiled by one Matthew Elrington of Millfield, Northumberland. Six volumes have Elrington's privately produced printed title page, of which four are titled "Selections from Literature," and two "Selections from Newspapers," with the seventh volume lacking a title being part of the selections from newspapers series. Six volumes are bound in half roan leather (of varying colors), one in half cloth, all with marbled paper over boards. One two-leaf gathering is detached, one or two volumes have a few illustrations or embellishments partly torn or removed, very good overall. The volumes were assembled by Elrington of "Millfield" as printed on one of the title pages, who mainly cut up broadsides, letterpress and calligraphic leaves, and blank sheets to make up the pages on stubs, and neatly pasted in the cuttings and illustrations, using mostly hand-colored woodcut illustrations to cover over any gaps on the page. The range of subjects appears to be random and varied, taken from both British and American newspapers, with articles on America, natural history, birds, and women; together with miscellaneous poems and essays, and reports of sensational crimes and villainy, spanning the years from the mid-1830's to the early 1850's. A compelling and arresting collection of many rare and unique pieces of ephemera, artfully arrayed in seven unique volumes.
