Karakorum, die erste Hauptstadt des mongolischen Weltreiches wird seit 1998 von Archäologen der Universität Bonn in einem interdisziplinären und internationalen Kooperationsprojekt erforscht. Die erstmalige langjährige Untersuchung einer neugegründeten Stadt in der mongolischen Steppe wirft neues Licht auf die Komplexität reiternomadischer Organisationsformen. Die Grabungsfläche an der Hauptstraße der Stadt eröffnen tiefe Einblicke in ein chinesisch geprägtes Handwerkerviertel sowie die Lebensumstände der Bewohner im 13./14. Jahrhundert n. Chr.
