Titel: [De occultis pharmacorum potestatibus] DE OCCVLTIS PHARMACORVM POTESTATIBVS: QVID, ET QVOTVplices eae sint: quibus in morbis, quomodo, quando, quem in curationibus vsum habeant: AVTHORE THOMA ERASTO, HEIDELBERgensis Scholae professore. ACCESSIT HVIC TRACTATVI DI sputatio alia eiusdem ferè argumenti, DE MEDICAMENTORVM purgantium facultate, trebius absoluta questionibus, in qua tota probè horum pharma corum natura declaratur. Thomas Erastus (Lieb(l)er) (1523-1583) is remembered chiefly as avehement critic of astrology, natural magic, and particularly of Paracelsus and iatrochemistry. "Erastus was, after all, a diehard Aristotelian and a confirmed Galenist. In his 1574 De occult ispharmacorum potestatibus Erastus continued to condemn the "deceits of the Paracelsians" (Fraudes Paracelsistarum) and flatly stated that the use of fire in preparing drugs renders them more dangerous, not more safe. Moreover, Erastus denied that ideas could be efficient causes and therefore that imagination could produce disease. Although he admitted that bodies contained an immanent incorporeal virtue, he did not accept the idea that disembodied semina or vital powers could exist independently and suddenly seize control of bodies. In short, Erastus' philosophy wholly rejected the disease mechanism propounded by Severinus. Speaking as a theologian as well as a physician, Erastus interpreted Paracelsus' conception of disease as an evil substance intro duced by God and concluded that the doctrine was heretical. Perhaps Severinus shied away from this sort of equation?" Joie Shackelford: A philosophical path for Paracelsian medicine. The ideas, intellectual context, and influence of Petrus Severinus (1540/2-1602), (2004) p.222 Thomas Erastus (original surname Lüber, Lieber, or Liebler;[1] September 7, 1524 - December 31, 1583) was a Swiss physician and theologian. He wrote 100 theses (later 75) in which he argued that the sins committed by Christians should be punished by the State, and that the Church should not withhold Sacraments as a form of punishment. They were published in 1589, after his death, with the title Explicatio gravissimae quaestionis. His name was later applied to Erastianism. Osler 2529; Durling 1380; VD16 E 3691; VD16 E 3688 (enth.
