John Eppstein formed the British Society for International Understanding to "find out and tell the truth about the great variety of peoples with whom we British have to deal and the real forces at work in international politics". It published the British Survey Main Edition, and British Survey Popular Series for use in class. In the inter-war years Eppstein worked in the Foreign Office and on British delegations to the League of Nations. As Director and Editor of the British Survey he selected authors based on direct experience: "They include men in official positions who must remain anonymous, many retired ambassadors and colonial administrators, businessmen, engineers, journalists and observant travellers", mostly British (British Survey April 1964). This issue from the Main Series looks at different types of cooperation in Nigeria before examining the specific case of cocoa, the Government and the Cooperative Movement (originating from a scheme devised by the Agricultural Department to improve the quality of cocoa), cooperative credit for peasant farmers (marketing, thrift, loan and credit societies), other cooperative ventures (village shops, schools, craft societies), and the Nigerian Co-Operative Federation presently including over 600 societies of various kinds.…

Although dated Dec 1947, this does not reference the riots of 2-6 Dec triggered by the Palestine Partition Plan that left 82 Jews, 33 Arabs, 4 Muslim Indians and 1 Somali dead. Instead, it states that "The story of Aden, in short, is that of a fortunate Colony" (p22). This describes the Pact that had been signed in 1955 between Turkey, Iraq, Britain, Pakistan and Iran; Arab reactions to it including from Jordan, Syria, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, Arab distrust; Russia's advantage; economic cooperation, atomic science, counter-subversion, help from oil; the US (results of the Suez Crisis, Eisenhower Doctrine, its support against Communist attack, pitfalls, value of the Pact). An appendix reproduces its operative clauses. The maps shows member countries, oilfields, refineries and pipelines. Soft cover. Zustand: Good. B/w illustrated self wraps 14 x 22cm. 16pp including 4 b/w maps by Michael Buffery. Good, lightly creased, tanned, with previous owner's name neatly written to the front top edge. John Eppstein formed the British Society for International Understanding to "find out and tell the truth about the great variety of peoples with whom we British have to deal and the real forces at work in international politics". It published the British Survey Main Edition, and British Survey Popular Series for use in class. As Director and Editor of the British Survey he selected authors based on direct experience: "They include men in official positions who must remain anonymous, many retired ambassadors and colonial administrators, businessmen, engineers, journalists and observant travellers", mostly British (British Survey April 1964). The author is described as a member of the British Society recently returned from the Levant, who deals with Soviet methods of penetration into the region (reference is made to a future issue covering US interests, probably August 1947 on Oil in the Middle East). In light of the recent approval of US loans to Greece and Turkey and growing oil output in the region, this presents a historical background (French, Russian and British interests), and the present situation for the USSR, Turkey, Iran, Arab countries, action in Jezireh in Syria, support of the Orthodox Church, propaganda in Syria, youth organisations in Lebanon, commercial and financial competition, Iraqi oil, unrest in Palestine, and Soviet diplomacy in Egypt. The maps show the general direction of Soviet penetration, the Iron Curtain, Jezireh showing the distribution of religious minorities, and the Arab League.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. B/w illustrated self wraps 14 x 22cm. 12pp including 2 b/w photos and a double-page map. Good, lightly creased, with some marks to the final page. This issue from the Main Series predates the Popular Series equivalent of December 1947. It covers geography, history, Arab background, the people, Aden today, and communications. Predating the riots of 1947, it states that "Until recently the tribes to the east were wilder and more warlike, resenting internal interference. They make good recruits for the local forces, but seem to have a fear of being made to go across the sea" (p10). The map on a scale of 1:7,500,000 shows territorial boundaries, undefined boundaries (between the Protectorate and Saudi, and Oman and Saudi), sea and air routes, the 1814-18 Railway, land over 6000 feet, and inset for Aden Colony. The photos include "a young Arab with his rifle, complete with cartridge belt and curved Arab dagger" to the front, and a camel drawn water cart.…

Soft cover. Zustand: Good. Self wraps with British Survey masthead 22x28cm. Printed by Lamport Gilbert & Co, Reading. Numbered pp81-84. Good, lightly tanned, two-hole punched at the spine fold (not impacting content) with horizontal centrefold. An early issue published by the British Association for International Understanding which had been launched by John Eppstein to "find out and tell the truth about the great variety of peoples with whom we British have to deal and the real forces at work in international politics". As Director and Editor, Eppstein selected authors based on direct experience: "They include men in official positions who must remain anonymous, many retired ambassadors and colonial administrators, businessmen, engineers, journalists and observant travellers", mostly British (British Survey April 1964). The author of this work is thus unidentified. The subject would have been of great immediate interest because Britain's involvement in the region was highly precarious and uncertain at this stage of WW2, appearing at the start of Rommel's offensive in North Africa (March), and shortly before the Axis-backed coup in Iraq (May), the Allied invasion of Vichy French Syria and Lebanon (June-July), and the Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran which impacted neighbouring Arab countries (August). In two main sections, the first covers "Islam" (history and description; Islam Today describing its geographical spread; Sects and divisions primarily focussing on Sunni and Shia). The second section covers "The Arabic Countries" (origins and definitions, The Arab Revival since 1847 taking in the Arab Revolt and the rise of Ibn Saud etc; The Arabs and the War contrasting Bedouin Arab views of Nazism (uncongenial) with the more nuanced views of urban Arabs; North Africa and colonial involvement; and the Arabs of Asia covering Syria, Palestine, Trans-Jordan, Iraq, and Saudi Arabia. Concluding remarks state that "The Arabic-speaking countries are watching the struggle of European Powers with a certain detachment".…

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. Blue printed wraps 14 x 22cm. 20, (1)pp, with contemporary invitation letter for the Society Governors' Annual Dinner laid in (May 1966 with the US Ambassador as guest of honour). Very good. The piece on the Arabian Peninsula describes its harsh geography, the people and traditions, early history, the Prophet, Ottomans and Wahhabis, Saudi Arabia (Ibn Saud, Mecca and other cities, oil, new towns and communications, mis-spent wealth (reversed by Faisal), towards a modern state), Aden and South Arabia (British presence, nationalism, Nasser and the Federation, British withdrawal and possible consequences), Muscat, Oman, Bahrain and the Gulf. The Yemen piece covers geography, people, commerce, society, and history. Curiously, this is credited to LJ Coverley, as authors were usually kept anonymous. There is a concluding comment by Eppstein on Saudi foreign policy and defence. Inside the back wrap is a timeline of wider global events for March 1966.…

Eppstein justifies this issue as follows: "Without some understanding of Islam it is not possible to assess the position in this troubled part of the world". This covers the religion (its features, the Arabs, religiosity, Muslim Theory, The Qu'ran, Muslim Practice, Shariah, the Prophet, Social behaviour, animals, women, medicine); historical background; and the present (Communism, Arab Nationalism, oil). Quoting Richard Burton and Lord Curzon, it argues the importance of "mutual tolerance and understanding between Christian Westerner and Muslim Oriental". The map of the Miuslim World distinguishes areas that are entirely Muslim, those with important Muslim communities, and the initial impact of Islam. The photos show scenes from Mecca, Pakistan, a Bedouin Arab, Cairo and Abadan, with an engraving of the Mahmal caravan on its way from Cairo to Mecca.…

This from the Popular Series was issued after the restoration of order, with increasing prosperity from oil, and the 12-year old Faisal II reassuringly at school in England. It contains sections on Iraq's early history and waterways, the encroachment of the desert, Iraq today (wildlife in the desert, nomads and townsmen, dress, Baghdad, alleys, a typical house, shops, bazaars, the coffee shop, Mohammedan ways, mosques and churches, Mohammedan Holy Days), international importance (air communications, oil), Government (the Mandate, independence, Rashid Ali Rebellion, Siege of Habbaniya, and restoration of order). The inner front wrap lists general facts and figures. Photos show people (fishermen, silversmiths, Kurdish porter, King's Bodyguard) and places (the airport, Kadhimain Mosque, Baghdad, Hamilton's Road etc).
