This is the story of a good man who deteriorates under emotional stresses on his person, with homosexual overtones, and a new compulsion to kill his wife. Curiously, in 1955, Engstrand himself walked into the lake in MacArthur Park and drowned.

Second printing (the first was in December 1941). 320pp. Stuart David Engstrand (1904-1955) was an American writer, probably best known as the author of 'Beyond the Forest'. This novel is largely set in Norway during the Second World War. The book is bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with darker blue titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the top corners and spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with about 2" being cut away from the top of the front free endpaper, presumably to remove an inscription. There is a little foxing on the fore edge of the text block.
