Known as the 'Queen of Cooks', her culinary skills were highly prized by Edward VII, with whom she was rumoured to have had an affair in the 1890s. She was also called 'The Duchess of Jermyn Street.' It is said that some of the scenes in Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh were inspired by the Cavendish Hotel under Lewis' management, in which she appears as her fictional counterpart Lottie Crump. Contains colour frontispiece, 208 pp with monochrome archive photographs throughout. The year is not given, but the water mark appears to read '[18]21'. Good clear signature. Fielding writes: 'My Dear Madam, / I shall have much pleasure in shewing you the pictures which I have prepared for the Exhibition, should it be agreeable to Mrs. Sharp & yourself to come to Newman at any hour on Monday or Tuesday next, & I hope you will do me the favour of persuading Mr Sharp to accompany you. / I remain, My Dear Madam, / Yours very faithful Servant / Copley Fielding'.

Fielding is praised as 'Our ENGLISH NOVEL's pioneer!', who 'stepped lower down and took | The piebald PEOPLE for his Book!' In what is perhaps the most vivid passage Dobson writes: 'Whose are the characters that give | Such sound reality? - that live | With such full pulse?
