The author is believed to be the same person who received the American Veterinary Epidemiology Society Diploma award in 1993. After his military service he became a civilian government employee. His last position was as assistant deputy administrator for international programs in the Agriculture Department's Food and Safety Inspection Service. Dr. Engel, who had worked for Agriculture in Washington since 1977, also had been the department's international scientific liaison since 1988. Over the years, he also had served on an interagency radiation research committee under the White House Office of Science and Technology. Dr. Engel held doctorates in veterinary medicine and radiation biology, wrote 60 scientific papers in fields such as radiation, toxicology, microbiology and food hygiene. He was a president of the World Association of Veterinary Food Hygienists. This work was supported by the Defense Atomic Support Agency. Forty-one adult rats were exposed to 3,000 r [MAD] regional irradiation from a 250-kvp source at a does rat of 172 r/min. Regional irradiation consisted of whole-body, head-shielded, and head-only, utilizing a specially built restraining apparatus for partial body irradiation. Rats exposed to the whole-body and head-shielded irradiation died at an average of 3.8 and 4.0 days post-exposure respectively. Rats exposed to the head-only irradiation died at an average of 15 days post-exposure; this group exhibited the largest weight loss of all irradiated groups. The amount of weight loss and interval of death appear to be dependent on the region of the body receiving the radiation insult.
