Mounted on Linen, and folding down into cloth covers, this is a detailed hand coloured illustration of a Watt Double-Acting Condensing Steam Engine, a pivotal invention of the Industrial Revolution, here drawn and engraved by John Emslie, and Published on September 15th 1848 by James Reynolds A beautifully produced folding engraving measuring 34 inches by 22 inches approx., and folding down into its cloth covers measuring 11.5 inches tall approx. This example was originally owned by Llewellyn Buckland Filleigh, who was the Father of Evan Henry Llewellyn who was Director of The Great Western Railway, The cloth covers have some noticeable sunning wear, bump to upper corner of front cover, some general corner rubbing wear, the engraving itself has some creasing wear to top right hand corner (see pictured) some edge wear, minor marks else in good general condition.

The map was drawn and engraved by H. Martin, 1851, @3.25 inches to 1 mile, divided into half mile squares. It covers Regents Park (NW), Victoria Park (NE), Isle of Dogs (SE), and Chelsea (SW). What came to be known as the Crystal Palace is shown fully on the lefthand edge in its original Hyde Park location before it was moved south of the river to Sydenham, labelled "Site of the Building for the Great Industrial Exhibition" with its layout about visible within the grey shading. The booklet compiles a street index (8)pp, Guide for Viewing London in Six Days (2)pp, Guide to the Sights and Amusements of London pp2-22 (p1 of which has been backed on to the back of the Guide for Viewing London in Six Days), a double-page Map Showing the Situation of the Chief Objects of Interest in London with the Main Thoroughfares and Railway Stations drawn and engraved by John Emslie also locating the "Great Exhibition" building in Hyde Park, and Sights and Amusements of London and Great Industrial Exhibition (2)pp. Map good with short closed tears at the edges and intersections, and minor loss at the outer margins (not affecting image). There have been archival tape repairs to the recto along full length of the vertical fold of the lower panel to reattach the map to the case (image fully visible if slightly milky), and to the verso along tears and at some intersections. There are also 3 earlier white paper repairs to the verso which are holding firm. Booklet good with foxing, and inner section coming slightly loose. Case very good with some scuffing.

N.B.James Reynolds produced some wonderful educational astronomical charts from around 1840 to around 1870.They were invariably hand coloured on card with some notes of explanation etc.Some had very clever tissue insets so that when held up to the light they illuminated the picture as if by magic and there are some wonderful transparent images produced to illuminate the sky.He produced various aspects of astronomy such as stars and constellations,comets,eclipses and planets near and far from Earth.John Emslie 1813 to 1875 was the principal artist and engraver of these wonderful charts.
