In 1973, the Foyle Fisheries Commission invited a team of fisheries experts from North America to examine the Foyle and its tributaries, and the state of health of its fish stocks. The research group spent the whole of July 1973 looking at the area in detail, interviewing "all those with a direct interest", and examining all relevant records. The fishing industries off the western coast of Donegal are included in the report. There followed two years of further work, culminating in this report. The report includes detailed recommendations on practical measures which the Foyle Fisheries Commission could take to guarantee the future of the fish stock and its habitat in the future. Chapters include: Impact of fisheries and environmental changes on the management of Atlantic salmon of the Foyle river system; Background materials and analytical procedures; Life history and characteristics of Foyle salmon; Coastal movements and relation to other salmon fisheries; Foyle net fisheries; Estuarial water quality and its relation to salmon fisheries; River runs of salmon and grilse; Exploitation of Foyle salmon and relation to stock recruitment; Dependence of Foyle salmon recruitment on parent stock; Towards maximising Foyle fisheries production; Management-oriented research - need for research; Institutional and economic aspects of Foyle fisheries management; Resource husbandry; Fisheries protection; Commercial fisheries production; The Londonderry fishery; Sport fishing; Commission administration; Fisheries management purposes and problems; Conclusions and recommendations. Appendices include: The brief; Iteinerary for investigation; Assessment of juvenile salmon stocks; Factors affecting salmon habitats; Two factors affecting Foyle salmon runs; Salmon habitats in the River Foyle system. Rigorously done, and a useful read. .
