Nicknames "The Thin Man", Elmer Layden (1903-1973) was the heaviest of The Four Horsemen (at 6 feet and 165 pounds). He was a fullback but played during the 2-way player era; his greatest game was the 1925 Rose Bowl in which he scored the first touchdown on a three yard run then on defense turned two interceptions inro touchdowns, thus accounting for three of the Fighting Irish scores in a 27-10 victory over Stanford, bringing Noter Dame its first national championship. After his playing career, he was the head football coach at Duquesne and then has head coach at Notre Dame from 1934 to 1940. He left that post to become Commissioner of the National Football League for six seasons. layen was elected to the Football Hall of Fame in 1951.
