"Among contemporary artists, Vik Muniz's work is exemplary. He makes photographs of materials such as ash, sugar, chocolate, and wire. Before he photographs them, the materials themselves are made into images. And the images are often taken from previous images and occasionally even photographs. The ash picks out a painting by Caspar David Friedrich; the chocolate traces one of Namuth's photos of Pollock painting; the dirt is scraped and molded into an imitation of Coubert's 'Origin of the World.'"
