Cannon was one of the twentieth century's most distinguished crusaders of medical science. As a scientist he left a rich legacy of discoveries that had a major impact on the direction of physiological research. As an educator at Harvard during the first decades of this century, Cannon played a pivotal role in charting a bold, innovative course for medical education within the United States. Cannon's life and career exemplified for many the courage of the researcher, and his work yielded many enduring scientific contributions. In the years before World War I Cannon created a sensation when he was the first to use Roentgen's x-rays for physiological purposes. Perhaps best known as the author of the 'flight or fight' response, Cannon was the first to define in physiological terms the body's remarkable ability to respond appropriately to a physical threat or emotional disturbance. This biography traces Cannon's life from his youth in Minnesota through the early years of his career as a professor of physiology at Harvard. Not only does it lay bare the private and public labors of Cannon, the emerging scientist, but it also examines in detail a dynamic and critical period during which medical science came into its own. Cannon proved to be a major agent of that change." Previous owner's name and address inscribed on the ffep. Otherwise both book and unclipped jacket are in excellent condition.
