English politician (1877-1938), MInister of Agriculture and Fisheries, and Secretary of the Architecture Club. All four items one page, quarto, and in very good condition. Last item with one inch closed horizontal tear (not affecting text). Three items stamped and two bearing the Society's stamp. All four signed 'J. H. Elder-Duncan'. ITEM ONE: At a recent meeting of the Architecture Club committee Arthur J. Davis 'raised the question of our helping in some way to give wider publicity to your prizes for design'. Bone, the London editor of the Manchester Guardian, has already published a note on this matter. Asks for another 15 copies of 'the short statement you prepared and handed to Mr. Davis', for circulation 'to our Press members with a request that my Committee would be glad if they would further the objects by getting a notice into their papers'. ITEM TWO: Brief mention of decision of the Architecture Club Executive Committee to book the Society's Hall. 'I may mention that I heard from Captain Bennett this morning about the meeting in connection with a memoiral to Sir Lawrence Weaver, and that we shall be represented.' ITEM THREE: Cancels the meeting. 'We had intended to have had a little public protest about the Charing Cross Bridge Scheme, but the march of events has been too swift for us, and any further opposition is a matter for Parliament.' FOUR: Brief note thanking Menzies for forgoing the 'fee arranged for the hire of the Hall. I hope that we shall be able to reciprocate in some way for this consideration.'.

Original boards, new cloth spine, uncut and partly unopened, the covers with the paper mostly worn to the boards, a small worm track in the top of the fore-edge margin of the last few leaves not affecting text, paper with faint browning. *Also contains Duncan's Harveian Oration - De Laudibus Gulielmi Harvei Oratio, Habita in Aedibus Academiae Mediae, prope aulam Collegii Regii Chirurgorum Edinburgensis, Ipsis Calendis Aprilis, 1778, Binis jam elapsis seculis ab ipsius natali. C. Elliot. Edinburgh. 1778. This was issued separately but here is added to the Cases, with continuous pagination and register. The book has added interest from the fact that CHARLES DARWIN [1758-1778], first son of Erasmus Darwin and uncle of Charles Robert Darwin, was assistant to Duncan in the Edinburgh Dispensatory - see page 4 Preface : 'It is but fair to mention, that the histories of the cases, taken at the admission of the patients, were not drawn up by myself. For these I have been indebted to the aid of three gentlemen, Mr. William Browne from Yorkshire, Mr. Samuel Byam Athill from Antigua, and Mr. Charles Darwin from Litchfield, who, while they have been students of medicine at Edinburgh, have, at different periods, officiated as my assistants at the Dispensary.' Some twenty-five case histories are discussed in this book, though it is not revealed who was responsible for taking the admission notes. However, in case XXV, page 335, Duncan gives credit to Darwin as follows: 'Mr. Darwin, who officiated as medical assistant at the Dispensary at the time when this patient's case was treated, and, who, besides extensive knowledge in every branch of medicine, is also eminently distinguished for his acquaintance with natural history, had the first opportunity of examining this worm after it was discharged. He found it to be one of that kind which Mr. Linnaeus has distinguished by the name of the Taenia lata.' Darwin died from a wound received in the dissecting room in Edinburgh. He was clearly a talented observer in medicine and science and the author of a posthumous work, edited by his father in 1780 - 'Experiments establishing a criterion between mucaginous and purulent matter'.

4pp., foolscap 8vo. Bifolium. The document consists of a long printed text, with blank sections completed in manuscript. It is docketted 'M.5 | Copy for Mr. Falconer | to appear 19/26 June 1810.' In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. Signed 'Alex Davidson' and dated 28 May 1810, before the witnesses 'John Anderson and John Robertson both Indwellers in Glasgow'. The document begins: 'GEORGE, &c. WHEREAS it is humbly meant and shewn to Us, by Our Right trusty [Archibald Colquhoun] Our Advocate, and by Our lovite [George Buchan] Solicitor of Our Stamp Duties in that part of Great Britain called Scotland, [.]'. The six individuals who are said to have failed to pay the 'New Duties commencing on the said 11th Day of October 1808' are: John Douglas, William Duncan, John Ewing, James Elder, Thomas Falconer, and John Fleming all Procurators in the Sheriff and Baillie Courts of Glasgow', each of whom is said to have forfeited the sum of £100.
