First trade edition. Publisher's original pink card wrappers with title printed in black. Illustrated with 7 black and white full-page drawings by Beresford Egan. A near very good copy, the binding firm with dust soiling to the covers, wear to the extremities and chipping to the spine. The contents with a previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, foxing to the endpapers and the occasional mark to page margins are otherwise in good order. The drawings remain clean and bright. Percy Reginald Stephensen (1901-1965) was an Australian writer, publisher and political activist, first for the Communists and later for far-right groups. In this satirical work he mocks the Conservative politician Sir William Joynson-Hicks, who was well-known for his authoritarianism, his campaigns against Communism and his attempts to clamp down on nightclubs and what he saw as the indecent literature of the roaring twenties (or, what he termed "the flood of filth coming across the Channel"). Notably, he was heavily implicated in the banning of Radclyffe Hall's lesbian novel, The Well of Loneliness (1928), as well as in forcing the publication of Lady Chatterley's Lover in an expurgated version. As D.H. Lawrence was a good friend of Stephensen, this was perhaps part of the reason for the present satire. Egan's drawings, greatly influenced by the work of Aubrey Beardsley and imbued with the spirit of 1920s decadence, provide the perfect riposte to Joynson-Hick's reactionary moralising. Provenance: from the library of Martin Stone. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

The edition of 1600, unnumbered and not signed, with 12 plates, including one in colour, and an illustrated titlepage, all by Beresford Egan. Original orange boards with orange buckram spine. Covers somewhat stained, as are the endpapers, corners very rubbed. Beresford Egan's work was highly influenced by Aubrey Beardsley and many of his illustrations were in an erotic vein. He was for many years an exponents of art déco. His career graph was phenomenal, beginning with The Sink of Solitude, the dazzling debut which was a satire on the banning of Radclyffe Hall's controversial novel The Well Of Loneliness (1928). That book marked the beginning of a prolific phase of around six years during which he created numerous illustrations and book covers for works by Aleister Crowley, Pierre Louÿs and Charles Baudelaire . Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Large Paper Edition, designed by Lewis F. White, privately printed in a Limited Edition of 1499 copies, this being no.681, and apparently signed by Egan on the Limitation page. Liberally illustrated by Egan's in his Art Deco, erotic manner, much in the vein of Aubrey Beardsley. The book was translated by his wife Catherine Bower Alcock, for whom, he also illustrated a number of other works. Measures 11 x 9 ins. Original patterned green faux leather with circular device to upper board, lettering at spine rather faded, light bumping to corner tips, a few spots of soiling to lower board. Preserved in clear, plastic protective sleeve. Orig. yellow endpapers. No old inscriptions. Included are two letters from Bereford EGAN to Adrian Woodhouse refuting the authenticity of the signature in the limitation page. The first letter, dated 21st July 1978, states "The signature to the SYLVAN PRESS copy of Beaudelaire's FLEURS DU MAL, which you showed me last evening, is not mine. It looks to me as though some-body has attempted, not very successfully, to imitate my manner of signing drawings in the 30's and 40's. I should like it on record, here and now, that I have never signed a single copy of the Sylvan Press edition and that at no time have I used the style of signature in question on any BOOK, DOCUMENT, or LETTER", signed by Egan in black ink in his bold, flamboyant hand. The second letter, from his address in Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea, London SW10, gives his unequivocal view of the Sylvan Press edition, "What a lamentable production it is! I would rather sign my death warrant than that infernal thing". Book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The sole UK printing published by The Fortune Press, London in 1948 (nd). The BOOK is in Very Good++ condition with just a little fading at the lower edges of the boards due to possible water staining. This has not seeped through internally. Light toning to the text-block. The very scarce WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition with a little toning to the spine and some mild age related markings. The wrapper looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book has been inscribed by the author in his characteristic calligraphic writing to the front blank end-paper : 'To Frank Pettigel, in memory of his exquisite characterisation of O.F.O.W. Wilde at the Boltons Theatre Club in 1948, from Beresford Egan'. 'O.F.O.W. Wilde' refers to Oscar (Fingal O'Flahertie Wills) Wilde's full name. The 'Bolton's Theatre Club' in London opened in 1947 and by operating as a club where membership was obligatory, was able to stage plays which might otherwise be prohibited under the Theatres Act 1843. The Play 'Oscar Wilde' which Egan was referring to was 'a 1936 play written by Leslie and Sewell Stokes. It is based on the life of the Irish playwright Oscar Wilde in which Wilde's friend, the controversial author and journalist Frank Harris, appears as a character. The play, which contains much of Wilde's actual writings, starts with Wilde's literary success and his friendship with Lord Alfred Douglas, turns into a courtroom melodrama, and ends with Wilde as a broken alcoholic after two years in prison. Owing to the play's subject matter it was never granted a licence by the Lord Chamberlain and could, therefore, only be staged in England at a theatre club where membership was required. The play's first production at London's Gate Theatre Studio in 1936 starred Robert Morley as Wilde and was produced by Norman Marshall. The play was revived again at the Bolton's Theatre Club, starring Frank Pettingell and directed by Leslie Stokes, in 1948.', (Wiki). The book itself, is a collection of poetry and prose written and profusely illustrated by the satirical artist and author Beresford Egan. A very interesting association copy and very scarce with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, first impression, in the scarce dust jacket, number 80 of 1,275 copies; the first 75 copies were printed on heavy unbleached handmade paper, with the rest printed on Kelmscott handmade paper. Pierre Louÿs, known for his erotic, lesbian, and classical themes, wrote these decadent sketches under the guise of translating the works of Lucian; Louÿs foreword, in which he outlines the circumstances surrounding his "translation" and Lucian's historical contexts, lends credence to this premise. The Deco artist Beresford Egan was a prolific illustrator of erotic works, and Louÿs's "highly conflicted and ambivalent sexual politics clearly serve[d] as a highly useful framework for understanding Egan's brand of post-Victorian Decadent eroticism" (Mahoney, p. 182). The Fortune Press specialized in gay erotica, and was founded by Reginald Caton in 1924; a decade later, Caton was prosecuted and found guilty for publishing obscene works. Kristin Mahoney, Literature and the Politics of Post-Victorian Decadence, Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2015. Octavo. Original blue quarter cloth, marbled sides, spine lettered in gilt, edges untrimmed. With illustrated dust jacket. With 6 full-page black and white illustrations by Beresford Egan.
