Knopf published the first American edition in 1920, the year Hamsun won the Nobel Prize for Literature and thirty years after Hunger was published in Norway. Grosset and Dunlap reprinted the book for its attractively designed "Novels of Distinction" series, with a striking dust jacket by Alfred Skrenda dated 1929. The copyright page was taken from the ninth printing of the Knopf edition.
