DeSalvo (1942-2018) was an American writer, editor, professor, and lecturer who lived in New Jersey. ; Kathleen Walsh D'Arcy's Irish roots stem from County Offaly and Tipperary. Her parents emigrated from Ireland in the 1920s and she was born and raised in Manhattan, in Holy Name Parish. Her mother, Kathleen Kearney Walsh, was a founding member and president of the Offaly Association, the first woman director of the United Irish Counties Association, the founder of the Irish Hospital Cheer Committee, and the president and founder of the East Hampton Irish American Club.Her father, Patrick F. Walsh, was a famous bandleader in New York, a member of the Musicians' Union, the Hotel Workers' Union, and the Tipperary Association.As a child, Kathleen was immersed in Irish culture. She was a step dancer with the McNiff School and a competitor in the U.I.C Feis, dancing and singing. She marched and step-danced up the avenue in the St. Patrick's Day Parade. She Illustrated A Number Of Children'S Books, Including Heidi, Hans Brinker, Stories Of Mrs. Molesworth, Stories By Juliana Horatia Ewing, And East O' The Sun, West O' The Moon. She Did Illustrations, Including Several Covers, For Such Magazines As The Ladies Home Journal, Mccall'S Magazine, And The Delineator. She Also Illustrated Textbooks For John C. Winston Co. And Scribner'S. Her Son Winslow Recalled That She Used A "Diminishing Glass," The Opposite Of A Magnifying Glass, To Help Her See How Her Large Drawings Would Look When Reduced To The Size Of A Book Page.

Housed in original publisher's box with full color pictorial pastedown, the box is a bit dust soiled and worn but intact and protected the book rather well. A collection of the writing of Victorian era author, Juliana Horatia Ewing, illustrated by Edna Cooke with 8 full page color plates which are in fine condition. Originally published with Cooke's illustrations in 1920, this is a 1935 reprint which was part of the Child's Own Library series. Size: Thick 8vo.
