Hardcover. Zustand: Good. 342pp with black and white illustrations in text, tissue-guarded plate frontispiece. Green cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering. Top edge gilt. Title page printed in red and black with central vignette. 8vo. Cloth is a little tired, rubbed and rounded at corners and tips of a sunned spine, a few mild marks. Shadowing and faint spotting on endpapers, tissue guard toned with offset toning in margins of frontispiece, hint of toning in margins throughout. A very pleasing vintage volume, elegantly produced albeit well used, providing a compelling guide to bookbinding practices up to the end of the 19th century.

Front hinge starting and some strained gutters. Some spotting and browning throughout internally.

Front and back covers marked and edgeworn; significant wear particularly towards bottom edge of spine. Hinges slightly shaken. Some light foxing to certain pages throughout, in addition to slight water damage at the top edge of the text block. b/w reproductions of artworks by the likes of Dante Gabrielle Rossetti, Aubrey Beardsley and Laurence Hausman, in addition to several in-text woodcut illustrations. A very good copy. First edition. Noteable for featuring the first appearance of Y. B. Yeates' short stoy 'Costello the Proud, Oona MacDermott and the Bitter Tongue', as well as the original lithograph 'The Doctor- Portrait of my Brother' by Jame McNeil Whistler.

Pages are very bright with the odd spot or handling mark. Light age toning to the endpapers. Good. book.

A very well-preserved example of this uncommon large paper edition, part of the Moray Library series. Gleeson White (1851-98) was a prolific player on the eighteen-nineties scene, editing several important periodicals from the time, including, with Charles Shannon, the Pageant. He provided the cover design for Wratislaw's Caprices, and was gifted number one of the special issue of that work by the author. The title Garde Joyeuse is taken from the name of castle given to Sir Lancelot in Arthurian legend.
