Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - In Stead: The Man, Edith K. Harper documents the psychic world of W.T. Stead-newspaper editor, author, pacifist, social reformer, and pioneer of investigative journalism. While controversial in his methods, Stead was driven by a fearless pursuit of truth and an unwavering faith in the unseen. While renowned for his journalism and activism, he considered his spiritual work, especially Julia's Bureau, his effort to connect the living with the dead, his greatest legacy. He boldly declared, 'Julia's Letters will be the Thomas à Kempis Imitation of the new century.'.

Edith Walker Woodling of Atlanta, Georgia, who earned her B.A. in English Literature from Emory University, a Master in Literature from the University of Pittsburgh, where she lived at the time, and later her Master of Divinity from Emory University's Candler School of Theology in 2024. She joined the faculty of Pace Academy in 1983 as an English teacher and assistant sponsor of the school's Service Learning program. By 1987 she was leading the program. In 1995,she was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Diocese of Atlanta by the Rt. Rev. Frank Kellogg Allan. Over the years, she served five parishes and held leadership roles in Episcopal schools, including serving as Head of Christ Church Episcopal School, the first ordained woman to lead an Episcopal school in the United States. She later served as Chaplain at St. Martin's Episcopal School, at St. Benedict's Episcopal Church, and as Interim Chaplain at Holy Innocents' Episcopal School. She was a life-long member and clergy member at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, After her ordination as a priest, she briefly served as the Priest in Charge at St. Anthony's Episcopal Church in Winder, Georgia ; The acclaimed actor reveals the passion, spirituality, and intellectual fervor that have driven his life and career, citing the elements of his childhood that gave him his sense of worth and ethics ; "I have no wish to play the pontificating fool, pretending that I've suddenly come up with the answers to all life's questions. Quite the contrary, I began this book as an exploration, an exercise in selfquestioning. In other words, I wanted to find out, as I looked back at a long and complicated life, with many twists and turns, how well I've done at measuring up to the values I myself have set." In this luminous memoir, a true American icon looks back on his celebrated life and career. His body of work is arguably the most morally significant in cinematic history, and the power and influence of that work are indicative of the character of the man behind the many storied roles. Sidney Poitier here explores these elements of character and personal values to take his own measure--as a man, as a husband and father, and as an actor. Poitier credits his parents and his childhood on tiny Cat Island in the Bahamas for equipping him with the unflinching sense of right and wrong and of selfworth that he has never surrendered and that have dramatically shaped his world. "In the kind of place where I grew up," recalls Poitier, "what's coming at you is the sound of the sea and the smell of the wind and momma's voice and the voice of your dad and the craziness of your brothers and sisters . and that's it." Without television, radio, and material distractions to obscure what matters most, he could enjoy the simple things, endure the long commitments, and find true meaning in his life. Poitier was uncompromising as he pursued a personal and public life that would honor his upbringing and the invaluable legacy of his parents just a few years after his introduction to indoor plumbing and the automobile, Poitier broke racial barrier after racial barrier to launch a pioneering acting career. Committed to the notion that what one does for a living articulates who one is, Poitier played only forceful and affecting characters who said something positive, useful, and lasting about the human condition. Here, finally, is Poitier's own introspective look at what has informed his performances and his life. Poitier explores the nature of sacrifice and commitment, pride and humility, rage and forgiveness, and paying the price for artistic integrity, ; FINE/FINE. Book.

In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION, very faint spots to prelims, occasionally recurrent to margins within, pp. 40, crown 8vo, original orange wrappers, faintly dustsoiled to front, a little chipped and nicked at overhanging edges, very good. Scarce. The author's second book of poetry, but the first under this name - her pre-War debut being 'Songs of John Oland' (1911). The publisher, Harold Monro, nurtured what Joy Grant terms her 'uncouth talent' (p. 121), and she would go on to establish a reputation on both sides of the Atlantic - but the 'constant conflict between domestic duties' to her husband and four sons 'and her desire to write' (ibid) created a tension, often explicit in her verse, with deleterious psychological effects. Wickham was born Edith Alice Mary Harper; she spent the bulk of her childhood in Australia and, having completed her education there, returned to her native England and embarked on training for an acting and singing career - these aspirations curtailed by the conditions of her marriage to Patrick Hepburn. Their union, though yielding four sons, does not seem to have been a happy one, and bitter recriminations are a feature of her verse - in retaliation, he had her committed to an asylum in 1913, following her release from which, her career, now as 'Anna Wickham', began in earnest with this book, written whilst in the Hampstead circles of David Garnett and D.H. Lawrence. Wickham left for Paris in the early 1920s in the company of her eldest son, where she developed a friendship and infatuation with Natalie Clifford Barney.
