A beautifully bound notebook for household recipes, left blank, designed by Edith Chester Goodwin, signed by her on the rear free endpaper recto, and bound by the skilled bookbinder Frank Garrett, his gilt binder's stamp to the rear turn-in. Frank Garrett was associated with the Birmingham Municipal School of Art and regularly exhibited at arts and crafts exhibitions of the period. Garrett learned the binding craft from Douglas Cockerell, who in turn learned from T. J. Cobden-Sanderson. Edith Chester Goodwin (1879-1969) was an illuminator born in Staffordshire who exhibited at the Royal Academy arts and crafts exhibitions. She studied at Birmingham School of Art from around 1916, and continued to work as an illuminator throughout her life, as well as taking jobs in silver work and fine furniture manufacture. She is known to have collaborated with Garrett on several pieces, including memorial books listing the war dead gifted to local parishes by the Royal British Legion. Octavo (200 x 125 mm). Title page and text neatly written in calligraphic manuscript in red, occasional pencil binding marks numbering the gatherings and noting which pages were to be "guarded". Finely bound in brown russia, titles stamped in gilt to front cover within central double rule frame tooled in blind and gilt with dot details, pansy motifs to corners, two pansy designs within frame, outer frame in gilt and blind to both covers, orange and white geometric patterned endpapers, top edge gilt, fore edge graduated into four, contents blank. A couple of spots of discolouration to notably smooth and buttery leather, minor scuffs to rear cover, touch of rubbing to extremities, tan burn to free endpapers from turn-ins, contents clean and fresh; a near-fine copy.
