Hardcover. Zustand: Good. First Thus. First thus (first edition of the larger format India Paper edition). Hardback, blue cloth with gilt titling to spine. 21 × 15cm, viii + 1164pp [2]. This copy contains a Christmas card from the composers Ursula and Ralph Vaughan Williams, handwritten by Ursula. The card features an early woodcut engraving of Aesop's The Fox and the Raven. When opened the left hand side of the card narrates the fable (from the 1485 Naples edition), and the handwritten message to the right hand side. The card has obviously been in the book for some considerable time. The complete plays of Shakespeare, with a brief introduction by the editor. They are printed in double columns, and on India paper which is, of course, very thin. Condition: Good condition. Light fading and rubbing to the boards, some creasing to the margins of the India paper. The inner binding is a little strained towards the end of the book, and there is a small red ink stain to the pages' top corner at the end of the book for about ten pages but not affecting text. Some tanning to the endpapers. The card is in good condition. With signed enclosure.
